So I plan to apply this Fall as a molecular bio major at Berkeley. My GPA will hopefully be around 3.75 (cc transfer student) by the end of the Fall semester. By the end of the Spring 2011 all of my prerequisites for this major will be complete except the physics series.

I, however, have recently become interested in computer science. I would apply as a comp. sci B.A. major but I will only have Calculus 1 and 2 completed by the end of this Fall semester. So I won't have linear algebra, differential equations, discrete math, or any comp. sci grades for them to evaluate me on. Based on this it seems highly unlikely that I would get accepted for this major.

So I am thinking if I get accepted as a molecular bio major then I will double major in comp. sci. If I get accepted to Berkeley this is my plan:

Summer 2011: CS 61A, Math 54
Fall 2011: CS 61B, CS 70, 2 upper div bio classes
Spring 2012: CS 61C, EECS 42 and 43, 2 upper div bio classes----->Apply for double major (Comp. Sci. B.A.)

Is this a solid plan for gaining acceptance as a double major to CS? If so, what GPA should I maintain in the CS prerequisites to be considered competitive?

Taking advantage of the 2012 and the 2013 summer session I believe I can complete both majors within 2 years but would not frown upon spending a 3rd year at Berkeley if necessary.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

@goingmeta Right, I probably know a little too much considering I haven’t been accepted yet. I plan to do consider my options for double majoring at the other UC’s I am applying to as well though.

I think it’s safer to just apply with 1 major. Both upper div MCB and upper div CS take a lot of time…

And a 3.75 in CC might feel kinda fly right now, but be careful, especially with CS and MCB…

I don’t know how tough upper div bio classes are but if they’re anything like Math/CS/Physics…that could be a pretty heavy workload for all your semesters

Yeah that doesn’t happen here. Most major in one or the other when it comes to MCB.

The general consensus seems to be that majoring in both would be too much to handle. Would that still be the case if I spent 3 years instead of 2 at UC? Or perhaps the reason people generally don’t do both is because usually people in MCB and other bio majors are generally headed to professional school and thus have no desire to learn computer science and also are on the lookout for grade protection?

i would guess it’s doable if you can stay on top of the material. don’t expect a lot of free time though.

I saw CS61C, EE42/43, and two upper div bio classes and lol’d.

This is a good idea in theory, and would get you a great job in computational biology, but I know plenty of intelligent people here that would succumb to the torture of a schedule like that.

You better take another semester if you’re thinking about the double. CS61C, EE42, EE43, MCB1xx, MCB1yy is gonna be a really bad idea. Split it up and take a couple more classes for random requirements / filler.

Going for 3 years and utilizing each summer session sounds much more reasonable than 2 years. It would allow me to take 2 CS courses and 1 upper div bio course every semester.
