Okay, I know its probably really simple to double major in Econ and IR, but how can I possibly minor in Film if I didn't apply as a freshman?

First, you take either CTCS 190 or CTCS 191, which are open to all USC students.
Second, you must have a declared major (or two declared majors - doesn’t matter).
Third - get ready - you walk into the world’s best film school and sign a form.

USC. A very good place to be.

wait thats it!?

That sounds so simple!

Yes, it is that simple . My daughter minored in Cinema and “Wait, that’s it?” may have been her exact words when she walked into SCA to inquire. She already had a declared major* and had already taken CTCS 190, so they handed her a form and she signed it. Her minor required 20 units, but minors are not limited in units - you can take as many as you can fit into your schedule. She took 42 units in SCA (she also studied abroad for a semester AND graduated on-time) because she LOVED the SCA classes.

I’m tellin’ ya… USC

*If you were accepted to a major, then you already have a declared major. If you were accepted “undeclared,” you just need to see your adviser and declare a major.

wow okay I am a declared major already in international Relations…wow…okay so I can definitely do that in one semester.

Thank you so much alamemom…you really are such a big help…I’m so excited…its actually hurting me to be in high school still lol.

Cause I always wanted to see about other stuff, but I wasn’t sure how to go through it…

USC is so flexible…I love it! Hopefully I get bumped up to fall. But did your daughter ask at Orientation?

Ask about minoring in Cinema? No, she didn’t ask at orientation. She had investigated the process of acquiring a minor in Cinema/Television during the application process and before she made her commitment deposit. She had also investigated the process at UCLA [Film Minor | UCLA School of TFT](Film Minor - UCLA School of TFTUCLA School of TFT) and noted that it was a complicated, confusing process AND not everyone was accepted to the minor. Bleh! At Berkeley, there was not a minor in film offered. So USC was the obvious choice.

She took CTCS 190* first semester freshman year and CTCS 191* second semester and applied for the minor towards the end of her freshman year. She started other SCA courses as a sophomore. (*You only need ONE of these two courses - my kiddo just wanted to take both.)

It really is amazing how flexible USC is and how welcoming all of the various schools are. My daughter also walked into Thornton to ask if she could take classes or lessons and they were SO nice. (And yes, students with ANY major can take private music lessons from Thornton faculty and graduate students as part of their course load - amazing!)

Wow…do you know anything about anneberg? Like…if I wanted to take classes or anything like that?

No, but here is a fact sheet for Annenberg minors http://annenberg.usc.edu/CurrentStudents/UGStudentSvcs/~/media/PDFs/current/Minors%20in%20COMM%20handout%2091312.ashx . Even without a minor, USC students can cross-register in other schools in many, many classes. There will be some courses that only declared majors can take, but there are plenty that are available.
