Double major in Journalism and Public Relations?

I'm 16 years old, graduating high school early in June 2013, and attending a community college for 1 or 2 years. I'm interested in majoring in Journalism and Public Relations, the community college I want to go to covers both majors in their general Communications major. I plan to transfer to Syracuse University and get my bachelors for both majors, but I was wondering if anyone else on this site double majored in both areas or knows anyone who does/did. Does it sound like a waste or something great? I figured Public Relations would look great with a Journalism degree when applying for jobs and interning. Also, Public Relations would be something to fall back on if the Journalism degree didn't work out for me. Sorry for the long explanation, I'm new here and really eager to hear other opinions and learn more about both majors!
Thank you :)

I’m going to post the same question I asked in another thread -

As a former Journalism major myself, I’m curious why anyone would do that now.
I’m not being critical, just curious.
The number of newspapers is tiny compared to when I was in school.
What do people now expect to do with a J degree?
Thanks.

Well I’ve heard that journalism is “dying”, but I honestly just think it’s evolving. Many people think that the newspaper business is slowing down, but people still read it on their nooks, right? Online Journalism is also becoming very popular and that’s something that I’d love to be involved in, if it doesn’t work out then I have my Public Relations degree. I’ve also read that job opportunities for Journalism majors go beyond writing for newspapers, magazines, etc.

Keep in mind that there is more to journalism than just newspaper. DS is attending Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts and knows a lot of people who are majoring in Television and Broadcast Journalism. Many of the friends who are also taking a minor in Public Relations. Although DS is in a Film major and not the TV Broadcast Journalism major, but any combination would go great together. This is why Dodge College houses these majors together. :)

OCELITE, thank you! I was thinking about doing Broadcast Journalism, but I just wasn’t sure about it.

I don’t think you really need both majors. I would imagine a J degree from Syracuse might get you a little bit more attention than would a PR degree from the same school. Perhaps major in J and minor in PR, or dabble with a few basic PR classes? I’m an editor now at a national magazine, and have no experience with PR aside from dealing with a lot of PR people. I’m not sure what they look for when it comes to hiring, but I don’t imagine the schooling would be terribly specialized. I think, as with journalism, work experience and internships are going to count more than your major(s).
