Double major in Math and Econ or major in math and minor in Econ

Hi beautiful people,
I am currently a first year at Hamilton College ( 45% of students major or minor in Econ). I have been taking Math and Econ courses with the idea of double majoring in Econ and Math. However, I am having a lot difficulty with Econ. I have tried both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics- I don’t even enjoy the classes. Math- statistics and stuff is what I am interested right now, and would like to work in Wall Street. I thought about majoring in Stats, but Hamilton doesn’t have that major. Anyways, I am trying to decide what to do major in Math and minor in Econ ( I am three classes away from minoring) or tough it out and major in both.
Thanks!
Also, I am international student- if that makes a difference.

Major in math. There is plenty you can do with a math degree. I don’t think it’s even that important if you minor in Econ.

I agree with mathmom. Major in math. If you don’t like the econ classes, that’s a sign. You may want to check out what career paths you want on Wall Street. It’s not just one field.

Hamilton has a fine program in statistics- it’s called Applied Math, and there are numerous ways to fulfill the required courses.

You ought to speak to your advisor. That’s what he/she is there for. There is a track which is oriented towards statistics for the social sciences, and a track which has more applications for business and finance.

Either would be fine for what you want. Drop the econ if you don’t like it.

Math major would be sufficient. You should definitely max out the statistics exposure within math. Blossom’s comment on Applied Math major is also a very good idea, given your career interests.

I agree with others than econ major is not important, but if it’s just a matter of a few additional courses, getting a minor could be helpful on your resume, and there’s a decent chance you will learn something that will prove to be useful later on. Some of the upper level courses on economic development and international economics, as well as economics of health and other topics, can broaden your experience.

My D has majors in both math (statistics track) and econ, though at a different school. She enjoys econ, so wants to major in it, but especially likes the more quantitative econ courses, like econometrics and economic forecasting and analysis. If there is flexibility in the minor, perhaps you would enjoy courses like that that are more “mathy.” However, if not, I don’t see the point of taking economics courses if you don’t like economics.

My son graduated with a double major in Math and Economics. He loved Economics but Math is what got him his job.

Thank you everyone! I think I will major in Math and minor in Econ (just because I am a few courses away from a minor).
