Rice first caught my attention with its strength in the sciences and engineering. I also know that the Shepherd School of Music is great. I am wondering if I could major in Physics, but also pursue a minor or double Major in music. Music is a very big part of my life and i want to at least minor in it at college. Is that possible at Rice?

no

you cannot be a x major AND a music major. you must be a MUSIC major first then tack on anything else

Basically, you need to specially be admitted into the music school. you cannot become a music major, you enter rice as one

^yes Antarius is right

You have to apply to Shepherd during your senior year and get accepted. Then you can double major with any other schools within Rice University.

You can however, be a science or engineering major and partake of many of Rice’s music course offerings, ensembles and lessons. There is no minor in music but that does not need to be important. What do you want to do with it after the degree that would make a minor important?

I believe there are many music classes for non-music majors.

not too many.you can pay for music instruction though with the shepard school

Yes, the music is conservatory level if you are majoring in it - very hard to get admitted and only for those who plan on a career in music. For those who just enjoy music, there are things such as Rice Choral, lessons with grad students, musical theater productions run by the res colleges (which use live orchestras composed of non-major and major musicians), various bands, a cappella groups, etc…
