Does Washington University in St. Louis have a good music program? I want to be a physician and so I am probably going to major in Biology, but my passion is vocal performance and I was wondering how the music program is there in case I want to double major. Also if anyone has any advice on other schools with good pre-med (biology)/music programs that I could double major, please let me know. Thanks!

There are a number of past threads here on double degrees/dual majors. Use the search this forum feature and you'll find them. Also, try "music and science".

Wa/SL is not normally one of the schools on a go to list for music performance disciplines.

A lot will depend on how serious you are/where your passions lie in narrowing down choices of schools. There are plenty of audition and non-audition based programs for an avocational pursuit of music as a minor, or just for the love of it.

A true double degree in a performance discipline and a science field is tricky, but doable. Both tend to be credit intensive degrees, with often overlapping class times and scheduling issues. Many are five year programs.

I agree with violadad...and since you are doing pre-med (extremely time intensive), perhaps you should just consider a school that has a great pre-med program and excellent voice teacher/voice ensembles. That way, you can have your cake and eat it...but not choke on it...Majoring in music requires a lot of theory classes and things you may not be as interested in as honing your vocal talent and singing in ensembles. I would look up the vocal faculty at Wash U and write to them. Another thing that S did was to contact the music department and ask to talk with a performance major on his instrument. Then you can ask all of the questions and perhaps that person will know a pre-med student and you can start talking with students in the field to determine a) how strong the music department is; and 2) whether it's possible/necessary to do a double major.
