Hello! So, right now my path was to double major in political science and economics. I really love the two and feel like they mesh together. However, I want to get into computer science, and somehow blend it into my majors. I was originally thinking of double majoring in poli sci and econ and then minoring in computer science but i feel like that would be too much. What do you guys think the best options for me are? I want to go into areas of like data analysts and thinktank type occupations
Don’t get too hung up on the words major/double major/minor: they really don’t matter as much as most students seem to think. Your major should be the core thing you want to do, and you use your electives to make it fit your interests. Add CompSci courses to your course load and see how it goes. Take the Econ classes that interest you. There are a lot of ways to help potential employers see that you have some econ and/or comp sci background even if you don’t major or minor in it, and grad schools will ask you what courses you took, not just what your major was. If it looks like a class or two more gets you the ‘major’ or ‘minor’ label and you want to, go for it- but one of the good parts about not declaring it as a major or minor is that you don’t have to take all of the requirements if only some of them are interesting to you!
If you think that you want to do data analysis, go get internships in the field and see how you like it irl I know from your other thread that you are unimpressed by students looking for internships early! - but they do that partly b/c they are swots, but also the good internships go early.
i just think at american the internship thing is too much. i agree with them, and plan on doing one, but why do one ur first semester freshman tear?
thank u for the advice tho. ill look into finding my interests more than sticking to a strict major. i think what u said gave me a new viewpoint
