Double Major in Spanish/French/ want to go to Medschool.

Hello, I'm not going to reveal my name, but I'm a Senor in High School. I live in Virginia and my GPA is around 3.4. I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I plan on doing so.

Background aside, I've been slacking a bit in the planning for a college department and now its time to act. I've been interested in being a surgeon for a while now and I obviously want to go and do everything I need to do to be a surgeon. I've taken an Outdoor Wilderness class and a class for CPR/AED with the American Red Cross so I'm dabbling a bit into the Medical arts.

I have several questions, but my first one is if I should major in two languages? I'm very proficient in Spanish because I'm Hispanic, but I never learned how to speak it fluently (I can comprehend Spanish though). I'm taking Spanish (my 4 year) and French (2 year) and I'm passing with flying colors and I want to continue to learn these languages because I enjoy them.

I've read that you don't need to major in any science classes to get into Medical School just the required classes so should I major in two languages and take the required classes on the side? I'm not against taking a Biology Major or "Pre-Med" major (yes I know you can't major in PreMed). I'm looking into Juniata College and EMU, but I want to go to a college that has a high acceptance rate (like 70 or higher) for Medical school and great foreign language program.

Thanks

Can anyone help me?

I can help you, as I have some exp in this dept.

If you want to major in a language then that is fine, but for your minor, I would take science classes. Keep in mind though, that just because you know spanish, does not mean that you will do well in the literature classes. They are written in old spanish and a lot of words are not in any dictionary around nor on google. When I once asked for help, a professor told me to read it and try to get the gist of it which means she probably didn’t know either. The literature classes are the hardest so if you do well in there then you should be ok.

I honestly cannot say if I would double major, you could major in one and minor in the other. The only way that I would double major is if money was not an option. You are right about taking the prerequisites though and if you are lucky, maybe they could fit into your minor option.

Thanks, I’ll do some research and cover some ground before I make my choice, but I’m wondering how much more would it cost for a double major? Another problem would be the potential schedule. Anyways thanks for the help.

Typically majors in a language are taught IN that language so if your language skills are not very advanced that might add to the timeline of completing the major. Definitely pick up guide sheets for the programs you are looking into, sooner rather than later. If you declare your intention to double major early your advisor can help you map a plan that can be completed in the same time frame.
