Double Major in Theatre and Computer Science Questions!

I had a few questions about double majoring at Northwestern in the two very unlike fields of Coputer Science and Theatre. I love computers.... and I love theatre. I actually like theatre and acting MORE, but I want the stability of a more traditional job.

Now my questions...
I heard that for double majors, people get two BAs, instead of two BSs. I know that it is to have the flexibility to take two major programs, but what if you want the rigor of a BS? Can you have two BSs or one BS (computers) and a BA (theatre)?

Lastly, I know it would be difficult, but is it possible to complete this all in four years, not five? And will I get a fine or something for double majoring and graduating early ( four years not five)? thank you all!!!

[Double Majors Across Schools - Undergraduate Advising – Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Northwestern University](http://www.weinberg.northwestern.edu/advising/majors/secondmajor/schools.html)

I hope this link helps to answer some of your questions. I think instead of getting two BA’s or BS’s you could just receive one BA or one BS.

It’s very possible to graduate in four years. Especially if you can do a lot of double counting between majors. I don’t think you will get charged extra for graduating in four years. If you wanted to graduate before four years, then I think you would, so you should be good.

I think there are some majors, including theatre, that you need to be accepted to when you initially apply, as they admit a limited number of students (in the case of theatre I think the limit is 100 and they have MANY more applicants than slots).

So if you wanted a double major that included theatre, you would have to apply to NU as a theatre major.

Correct?

You can transfer into theatre, but it’s really really difficult to do so. You should apply as a theatre major.

Thanks, illinoisgirl324! When we toured they implied you couldn’t transfer in to the theatre program, but I would guess some theatre majors must transfer out as they are drawn toward different majors so it makes sense that some people are able to transfer in.

Yep, I’m pretty sure that’s how it works – essentially, you can only transfer into the theatre program if a spot becomes available due to someone else leaving it. I think.

Hi SpencOS-
The link mathmaniac11 gave is a good guideline.
Our DD’s experience-entered NU as a theater major. Opted to ADD a major and a minor from Weinberg. Her BA degree was issued by the School of Communication-and read: Bachelor of Arts in Communication. It did not list her majors or minor. However-her transcript did.
Oh…and she finished early. So-bottom line-go for what you are interested in studying. NU will work with you.
