Hello. I am considering majoring in film production and having my minor in MT(BA) at USC. Is this possible/realistic?

I am also looking for double majoring. I was hoping to double major in MT (BFA) and either Psychology or neuroscience. We have heard on visits that it is possible to double major at some schools (e.g. Michigan, Syracuse, Tulane). However we were wondering what other schools allow double majoring? thanks

My s is completing a dual degree at Univ. of Michigan in MT and Engineering. He is going into his Jr year this fall. I would be happy to share information if you would like to PM me.

Not a BFA (though from what we understand you can have equally intense MT training if you choose), but a lot of kids double major at Northwestern. Apparently the quarter system makes it easy to do in 4 years at NU, while in many/most BFA programs that allow a double major, most/many kids take 5 years.

the mom here…
thanks both of you
britibrat1961- I think we met or saw your son when we visited. The other kids said, see, he is doing both! They bragged about him too!
MomCares- we visited there and I loved it, she didn’t although her head is turning more towards it with a friend having gotten in there and wanting to double major
I’m hoping she hears of others. She wants the big U feel with an MT program.

any other schools that you can double major, realistically, with a MT major?

fourkidsmom,

As I have found, technically it is possible at many schools, but graduating in 4 years becomes tricky. Especially since MT course outline are often very specific. For example, this is an email I received from a student affairs dean at Syracuse. It was regarding a double major in MT and something in the Newhouse school (Journalism, Broadcasting, etc.)

“We have not had a Musical Theater/Newhouse major in the many years I have been
working with our students. The closest we’ve come is drama. The one TRF
student who graduated with these 2 majors took 6 years. He first completed his
drama requirements and then worked [journalism] into the last 3 years. The combined
number of credits was 170+ It makes more sense and would be more efficient to
complete the Bachelor’s degree in one program and apply for a professional
Master’s in the other (most likely Newhouse).”

Just some info from TONS of research:

I know that at Elon double majoring is “impossible,” but minoring in another area is quite possible.

At Emerson, if you want to pursue a double major you will most likely be placed into the Theatre BA program instead of the BFA. (that is what an Emerson performing arts admissions rep stated.)

NYU allows for double majoring, but only in another area through their liberal arts school.

The University of Michigan is very supportive of double majoring, as long as it is possible.

At Penn State, it is possible to minor, in some cases.

At Indiana University, it is possible to double major, but it will most likely take 5 or 6 years to graduate.

At Oklahoma City U, double majoring is possible, but has only EVER happened with another area through the school of music.

At American University, double majoring is VERY doable.

At Brandeis Univeristy, double (even triple) majoring is highly encouraged!

At the University of Arizona, it is possible, but you would most likely have to attend summer school or stay an extra semester.

At Baldwin Wallace, it is possible.

I also know that at Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, and CCM it is impossible to double major or minor.

What you will find is that you have to do a lot of research, and that it double majoring is a highly personal matter. It becomes more doable for some students, as they have many AP credits. Also, it depends on what a student wants to double major in, as some majors are more accommodating to an MT schedule.

Hope that helps,
EJ

At James Madison University it is possible (depending on the second major requirements it can be done in 4 - 5 years).

Wow, thanks alot for the help guys! Just one question: Does anybody know anything about USC?

I am almost positive that a major in film production and a minor in MT is possible.

You should email someone from the film program and ask them.

Thanks for the info EJmusicman! She’s had an interest in psychology for awhile and now truly wants to double major with that or Neuroscience. The fifth year isn’t a problem as lots of kids have that…it’s the sixth I’m not sure I could take! We’ll see what happens next year as the applications have to be filled out and auditions performed. If anyone else has information, I’d be thrilled to see it!

University of Tulsa told my daughter she could double major in costuming and MT. It’s a BA program but the level and amount of training is practically a BFA. Yet it does retain some flexibility - in my D’s case, she has quite a few dual credit hours coming in which would have made it possible for her to do without an extra year.

Hey KatMT, do you know if it would be possible to double major in MT and something else when you’re on the BM track?

I have a friend who graduated from production here at SC in 3 years so it should be possible to add an MT minor onto that if you spread your classes out correctly.

Production is super intense, though, I don’t think many people add a second major to it, but I don’t see why you couldn’t minor in MT. It would be a challenge but I think it would be possible.

Hi CarolAnneMT – This would be a dual degree (combining a BM and a BA [or another degree]), so it would take a little more doing. I think there is a BM MT student also majoring in Russian (BA). I could put you in touch with him if you would like.

Just a slight clarification re: CMU
Since MT is treated as a double major with Acting by the Drama School, double-majoring would not work. If very careful in planning, a minor might work. Generally, it takes a lot of work even to add a minor to the Acting major but I can cite successful examples, one of whom also took a number of the MT classes (no dance but music and voice) in addition to an academic minor in political science. A big issue will be finding the class times needed to work through a sequence of coursework, given the length of dance classes, acting classes and production classes. Mornings are essentially fully booked the first two years. Any minor requiring labs would just not fit. Something that may make this more feasible than when S started is the move to have the drama literature and history coursework filled by qualified coursework from other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Perhaps those courses could be used as part of the minor’s intro classes as well.

Good luck!
