Double Major: Music (Vocal/Opera Performance) + Biochem

Hi,

I’m having a tough time looking for colleges that offer both vocal performance and biochemistry within the same network. I have thought about enrolling in two separate colleges but the only issue is financial aid! Eastman @ U of Rochester is an option, but could I have help with picking some other schools to look into? Also, I’ve heard that if you’re going to go into any music performance, it is wise to double major in something else. Is that true?

Thanks!

Perhaps U of Cincinnati/CCM?

Don’t know what your grade/stats are like but Johns Hopkins/Peabody

Michigan does. Our tour guide was a double major in vocal and something else that I can’t remember. She did say that you’d likely have to graduate in five years, though, unless you took on a really heavy course load.

I believe Muhlenberg will let you double-major in these 2 subjects. My d is attending this fall with very generous merit and need-based aid. Skidmore might also, though it looks like the major is actually Chem with a concentration in Biochem. Maybe Oberlin, Macalester?

Consider posting your question in the music majors forum where there are people with experience in music performance admissions.
Also, read this thread about double degrees/majors with music:

I believe David Lane is the Director of admissions at Peabody Conservatory.
Whether or not it is wise to double major in something else if you are trying to go into music has been debated quite a bit on this site. There is no one right answer. You could search and find some previous threads on this topic. Some people will argue that it may divide your energy and keep you from fulfilling your full potential for music. You should read the thread above about double degrees and really think about your motivation for pursuing a second major. It can be difficult ( but not impossible) to schedule labs in a science major when also pursuing music performance.
