I've been accepted to Rice, but I'm unsure what to major and minor in.
I enjoy languages, and I'm pre-med, so I can have:

1) Bio and Hispanic studies double major
2) Hispanic studies major/Bio minor
3) Bio major/ Spanish minor

I want to be able to complete my requirements on time and with relative ease (I say relative because...it's Rice.)
What should I do to graduate on time, keep a good GPA for grad school, and complete without too much hassle and stress?

Dont worry about it now. Some people major in Electrical engineering and Econ and make it out in 4 years, so what you want to do is very possible.

Also, I promise that the likelihood of you changing your major or switching between them all will change or at least be reconsidered many times… I’m in my first semester and I’m already re-thinking some stuff. Don’t sweat it You’ll see what you can handle when you get here

Hispanic studies and pre-med coursework. Med schools don’t care what you major in as long as you took the required pre-med coursework and show that you’re genuinely interested.

Just wanted to chime in - hispanic studies is only 8 courses for double-majors, so it would be really easy to complete (my minor, for reference, is 6 courses and I’m completing it in 3 semesters w/ engineering). I think the combining it with biology for a double major would really benefit you, especially if you plan to work with hispanic populations - I know we have some upper level spanish courses that focus on medical terminology, and MANY medical service trips to south/central america.

It’s even easier to double major if you come in with plenty of AP credit to take care of your distribution courses. Unfortunately, since last year, a lot of AP credit moved from actually counting for a class to “AP/other credit,” which though going towards graduation, does zip for placement or distribution. A BA in biological sciences will basically get you thru a lot of your premed requirements. A lot of the premeds at Rice seem to be biochem though, since it pretty much gets you thru all of them and then some. It’s true that what you major in doesn’t really play a part in med school decisions though so long as you complete requirements and show a strong background in those sciences. You can definitely graduate/complete requirements on time with any of your listed possibilities.

There is no bio minor, but there is a Biochemistry minor, and you could also double major or major in hispanic studies and just fulfill premed requirements. So don’t worry too much about all that just yet. Congratulations on getting in- you’ll love rice.
