Hi all!
I have recently enrolled into the Rutgers SAS, and I am looking to do a double major in French and Psychology, but I also want to take pre-med courses as well. My question is would it even be possible to do this and if not should I just minor in French, major in Psych and then take pre-med courses on the side?

My son double majored in Biology and Spanish so it can be done with hard work.

Double major in French and psychology…and you’re a premed?

Here’s the thing. Most med schools require you to take 2 semesters of the following:
gen chem, gen bio, physics, orgo, math, and intensive writing english.

If you’re a French and psychology major, I’m assuming these courses are not required for you to earn your B.S. degrees…which means that you have to take your departmental courses and premed courses separately. Allow me to remind you that there are only 24 hours in a day, so I’m not sure if this is a smart thing to do.

If you were a science or math major, on the other hand, it will be very convenient for you, because some of your required courses also satisfy some of the premed course requirements. It’s like killing two birds with one stone. Double majoring in closely related areas such as biology/neuroscience or psychology/neuro, math/physics, etc…may not be as bad, but French and psychology sounds out of nowhere.

Also, why are you so desperate to minor in something when you’re premed? I never understood that. Frankly,if you minor in something, it doesn’t mean anything. Your diploma only includes your major, so why even bother? Unless you’re truly interested in something and wish to continue pursuing that area of study on the side, I would pick one major and go for it.

Med school admission is a serious business, and you really shouldn’t experiment with your multiple majors and minors (hence, your GPA) in college.

I agree with Sixflags… Med school application process is very brutel, We went through it with my son. You also have to remember that you have to study for your MCAT, do some research work, do some volunteer work plus shadowing a doctor. My son was able to double major because he dedicated a whole semester to study abroad and he had a lot of AP credits. A lot of med schools like humanities and so a major and a minor is not a bad idea. And if you really want to double major, see if you can take some of the courses in the summer.
