Double Major Question and Chances

Hi CC! Im a rising senior this year, and Im not quite sure what I wnat to major in yet. How is/Does Penn even have an undecided program? Right now I am leaning at going into Marketing, but Im also looking ta music as well. Are you allowed to double major outside of your school (Wharton Marketing track and Music?) Thanks! Here are my current stats if you want to chance me :) (sorry, I still need to take the SAT 2 and a few AP's)

Male/White/Central Penn.

SAT I: 2050 (CR 700, M 690, W 660)
GPA: unweighted 3.9
Class Rank: Top 2/~170. school practically never sends students to elite schools/ivys
SAT II: didnt take yet, planning on Math II and another (any suggestions?)
AP: English (didnt get score yet), Calc (This year), Chem (This year)
Extra: participating in Dual Enrollment Program at a local Community College. 2 Classes per semester. (11th/12the Grade) Made the Deans List.

EC: Band (section leader 11/12, all-district 10/11, all-regions 11, most likely all-state this year)
Choir (all-regions 11)
Orchestra (9-12, going to districts/regions this year barring me bombing my audition)
NJHS (9)
NHS (11, 12)
Theatre (8-12 stage crew/supporting roles)
Cross Country (9-12, Captain 11-12, districts team 9-12, letterwinner 9-12, most improved 10, MVP 11)
Swimming (9-12, Captain 11-12, Leagues 9, Districts 10-12, letterwinner 9-12)
Track (9-12, leagues 9-12)
Varsity Club (11,12)

Community: Traveled with section leaders in the band to local nursing homes to play for residents.
Caroled at nursing homes with Music Theory Class
Helped at coin drive- proceeds went to local hospital

Hook: Guidance Conselor has an alumni connection who will write a reccomendation for me.

Im thinking about retaking the SAT, hoping for a 2200+ to be a more solid candidate. (rose my score from 1830-2050 on previous test.)

If you want to have two majors in different schools you need to apply for a dual degree. To do so, you just need a minimum GPA for each school (3.8 for Wharton, ~3.0 for College and SEAS). 3.8 is much tougher to get at Penn than it was in high school, so if Marketing is one major you’re interested in, apply to Wharton as a senior in high school then apply for a dual degree in the College as a sophomore to major in music.

Aside the fact that you’re from Central PA (and not the Main Line) I can’t think of anything too special in your application. Best of luck.

thanks for the help. I thought Wharton might be really strict about dual-degree requirements, so I was hoping it would be at least possible. I dont know if I’d even want to double major if I got into Wharton, knowing the difficulty of the program. I think taking one major my Freshman year would be a good idea to help me get used to Penn before deciding what to do from there.

I know my chances arent amazing, but then again whose are at Penn? :stuck_out_tongue: Ive seen plenty of 2400 4.0’s get turned down on the offcial decision threads, so I think I just need to write some rockin’ essays and maybe wrack up some more volunteer work to help boost my character/personal quality ‘score’ so to speak. Im kinda hoping the admissions office likes that I stood out in an area where most students are just happy to coast along and be average. Im thinking about writing an essay along those lines…but I dont want to come off as conceited…man do I have alot to think about haha.

keep 'em comin!

I figured my chances arent great

Wharton isn’t strict about dual degree requirements. You just need to complete what is necessary for a Wharton degree and the other degree. If you don’t come in with the right AP credit and don’t hit the ground running this can possibly take more than 4 years to accomplish, so many people abandon the dual degree to graduate on time.
