So this isn’t exactly specific to Davis but I am currently an econ major and I was thinking of double majoring in political science w/econ but as I was reading the requirements I thought that a minor in political science would be a better idea but I was wondering if grad schools/people hiring would even care if I had a double major in econ and poli sci vs just a minor in poli sci. So basically I am asking if I should minor in poli sci instead of double majoring.
Unless you’re applying to jobs that specifically require political science knowledge at the level of having a full major, employers won’t particularly care that you have a minor in poli sci instead of a major. Similarly, unless you’re applying to political science grad programs, grad schools won’t particularly care if you have a minor instead of a major. In both those cases, it’s not like the minor stops you from taking additional poli sci electives if you want, and just having a minor shouldn’t close any major doors.
Aren’t you an incoming freshman? How about waiting a couple quarters and taking classes in both econ and poli sci before deciding on this? You really don’t know how a field truly is until you’ve taken college-level classes…and even then, it isn’t until upper division classes that you have the best idea of what the field is actually like. Plus both those majors are light on requirements anyway.
@PhantomVirgo What jobs would require me to have a political science major? and yes I am an incoming freshman that’s why I have been posting so many dumb questions lately lol… I am interested in either a career in business or politics so I thought an econ and poli sci combo would get me where I need to be but I am just not sure how the balance should be
I can’t think of any off-hand.
With either of those, a minor in political science shouldn’t close any doors. Double major if you want, but know that it shouldn’t be necessary.
