Double Major vs Major + Minor when graduating early

Hello parents,

I am currently part of the class of 2012 and a declared double major (Management & Business and International Affairs). However, I am well ahead on credits and have decided to apply to accelerate my degree and graduate with the class of 2011 next spring. I am now wondering if I shouldn't switch my double major to a Management and Business major with an International Affairs minor, because it would make next year marginally easier as well as ease the paperwork. I am planning on going to law school once I graduate. From what I've read, it doesn't normally make much of a difference, but I wasn't sure if it would make a difference that I am graduating in 3 years versus 4.

Do you all think there is any particular advantage or disadvantage to one over the other?

Thanks in advance.

I think saving a year’s tuition is a great idea. The only downside I see is that you’ll have to really race into law school applications.

Thanks for your reply, nemom. The school I go to is unfortunately very expensive, and seems to get more expensive every year, so that year of tuition can make a huge difference. I’m actually planning on taking a year off to work, so I won’t have to rush to take the LSAT either. Do you think that it would be an advantage to show I could complete a double major in three years, or do you think a major and a minor is sufficient?

I don’t think that the amount of time it took you to complete the two majors will make a difference. What would are the variety of courses you took in the relevant subjects above and beyond the minimum required to fulfill the requirements, the level of difficulty of the courses and, of course, the grades you got (very important for law school). How long it took you to do all that is of little interest.

If you intend to go on to law school then there wouldn’t really be an advantage for two majors over a major/minor.
