So, I have seen this question posed in other parts of this board, but never with the combination of double major and double minor that I am planning on, so I am going to go ahead and post my personal dilemma.

I am currently a senior in high school, and I have four things that I am extremely passionate about: acting, writing, film making, and the Spanish language. My life goal is to either be an actress who occasionally makes films or a film maker who occasionally asks, and I want to publish at least one novel in my life time. Spanish really doesn't tie into my life plans other than the fact that I have been taking Spanish since freshman year, and I feel like it would be a waste not to continue on with it in college; I figure I might study abroad in Spain for a bit to make good use of my knowledge of the language and it would be good to have for any travels that my dream career path may have in store for me.

With all of that in mind, I am planning on applying to schools with the intention of double majoring in film and theatre with a double minor in English and Spanish. Would this kill my college social life? Is it even possible considering the extremely demanding schedules of both film and theatre? Or does it all depend on the school I go to?

Think of a major in college, assuming you’re going full time, as a full time job. While there may be a lot of overlap between the general educational requirements of obtaining a degree in different majors, the core requirments are unique to that major. For many people, completing a single major can take as long as 6 years. While I encourage you to shoot for the stars, it’s difficult to simultaneously hit more than one at a time. And frankly, colleges aren’t really set up to allow core courses in different majors and/or minors to be taken at different times of the day, so scheduling all the limited offerings of the courses required would either be very difficult, or, in most cases, impossible in a given term no matter where you go.

So, after saying all that, please don’t give up on achieving your goals, just understand that for what you want to do, I’d expect to spend 6-8 years in a university (and or universities) in order to accomplish that goal.

Unless, of course, you can be in two, or more, places at the same time, and can successfully divide your undivided attention between multiple majors and minors.
;-)

One major and a minor is the max for mortals, a double major at most if there is overlap or you come with credits from HS. Acting and film both tend to be intensive of your time and it would be difficult to squeeze in a second major. Having said t hat, check a couple colleges you are interested and see what possible combinations from their course catalogs look like for course load.
