I’ve strongly considered double majoring in economics and physics with a minor in either statistics, cs, or poli sci/I.R. The latter is a little left field but I find the indirect influence between economics and politics quite interesting, not to mention I have a strong interest in I.R. and often think about how to bring both worlds (PHY and I.R.) together.
If anything, I may simply focus on I.R. on my own time. I may be overreaching with the minor, though I can see how CS could be beneficial.
Have you started college yet? if not, wait until you get there. Minors are well…a minor consideration. The name / number / combination of majors/minors is less important than you might think. If you are thinking of going for grad school in either IR or Physics, it is helpful to have a major in that subject, but that’s about it. Go to college, start the coursework for each one and then…follow your truest interests and the major/minor stuff will sort itself out.
Not quite yet. I have a somewhat unusual situation and am going to start CC. It’s been a few years since I graduated HS so I’ll definitely be a non-traditional student. I’ve been going over math subjects and advancing on my own before I fully begin classes and take a placement test. I know I really enjoy mathematics and have always been fascinated by physics. I took a PHY courses on Khan Academy finally
giving into my curiosity (as well as maths) and loved it. However I also hold a strong admiration for public policy, I.R. and economics and feel the latter could maybe be a backdoor to the first two.
I’ve been using my time in quarantine to do math and tend to get obsessive and eager as I see myself progress making it difficult for me to stop and sleep, so I’m probably not even in the right state of mind. I think once the restrictions tone down and we return to ‘normal’ (and start school in my case), I’ll be in a more rational mindset.
Could a minor in something like I.R. be beneficial if just peaking into the world of public policy or will economics suffice?
No matter what, I know physics stays and I’m very favorable with the idea of double majoring in PHY/ECON considering I’ll be taking the math classes necessary for either one, regardless.
Thanks!
