Double Major?

Hi, I checked out all the classes I need to double major in robotics engineering and art accounting for overlaps and so on. There're two scenarios: 1) take 3 classes per quarter for 4 years plus 9 classes in the summer (during the last 3 years); OR 2) take 4 classes per quarter for 4 years minus one class.

My question is:
1) Would 4 classes per quarter be a hassle? And what if it's occational?
2) Can I rely on the spots for summer programs if I always sign up early?
3) Is it hard to find places to live near UCSC during summer? Do they offer a place?

Thanks in advance for answering.

Sheesh, someone has a death wish. 3 classes per quarter is the most realistic scenario, especially since with Engineering you’re still going to have 1-2 unit labs in addition to that. Perhaps look at minoring in Art instead of majoring? Just a suggestion. :)

The issue here is that the art program is terribly impacted. My roommate is an art major, who came into UCSC with 30 credits (giving her an earlier enrollment time), and she still was not able to get into a single art class until the first quarter of her second year. Not to mention that summer course availability is unpredictable. And the art classes are still ridiculously small, usually 20 or less students. You’ll be fighting tooth and nail to get in no matter which quarter. However, it is not hard to find summer housing.

There is no art minor.

And like barnaby said, with engineering you will often get 17-19 unit quarters due to 3 classes and the additional labs. Both studio art classes and engineering classes are a massive drain on time.

Have you ever considered the possibility that any of two classes you plan to take at the same time might have overlapping time schedule, or any of them got cancelled due to the budget issue? Don’t be so sure about it, leave yourself a plan B…

I see, thanks for all your advices, I am just asking around to see how things are (since I am just an incoming student). It sounds more realistic to just stick with the engineering major because other interests like music (same deal), languages (requires 2 year of college), etc are impossible tasks within 4 years. Now it’s obvious that I should consider something else like club and sports! Thanks again for the responses.
