Double Major?

Is it possible to double major in either math or science and musical theatre? If so, when do I have to audition for the MT major? How competitive is the program? I really would love to continue MT into college, but I don’t know if I am good enough for a major in MT.

Thanks

it is possible, but not easy. At Parents’ Day, they told us that students who want to double major need to use all their electives towards this.

That’s fine with me. I plan to have a fair amount of credits going into the university, so I can focus my elective credits on more things since I shouldn’t have much GE stuff left to do.

How competitive is the program?

The Musical Theatre program at NYU/Tisch is one of the most selective in the entire country - if not the most selective - because of its very high profile and huge numbers of impressively qualified applicants.

Most of the people auditioning for the MT program at NYU for fall of 2011 have already scheduled their auditions by now. Check the website for more information.

So it is too late for me to audition or set one up? Also, would I have to travel to NYU for an audition or would I simply be able to send in a tape if I can’t get there?

It may be- scheduling began october first but you can see if there are any more available spots through the Tisch drama website. They do regional auditions at about 13 locations around the county- I auditioned in San Francisco last year. I don’t think they accept tapes but you could double check. Best of luck!

I can’t find anything about auditions or musical theatre in general on the tisch website. I found some stuff on the Steinhardt website though.

kadams - Here are the audition dates/locations for this auditions season:
[Dates & Locations: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/dr_dateslocations.html)

If you are really interested in Tisch you should apply and get your audition scheduled asap before the dates fill up. My D auditioned in Austin last year and LOVED theTisch audition. It was her favorite of all she did. Everyone dances, then you sing and do your monologue. And they really seem interested in what you have to say during the interview. It was very laid back but also exciting. She was accepted but ended up deciding to attend another program.

Keep in mind that Tisch is a 50/50 process. Half of the decision is based on your academics and half on your audition. And it is all or nothing - you apply to Tisch and are either accepted to Tisch or not at all. You can’t be accepted to “just NYU.” And Tisch will place you in the studio they feel is most appropriate. You can say at the audition that you will only accept the MT studio and you will be in or out of that studio. Or you can say you will accept any studio placement and they will assign you to the studio - maybe MT but also maybe another acting studio.

Tisch is also very expensive. When my D received her package it was estimated that the total COA for this year was just under $60,000. So if financial aid is important to you just be prepared for sticker shock if you do get in.

Best of luck in deciding what you want to do.

I think I would apply to Steinhardt school instead of Tisch. I have read that Steinhardt is more for a musician and Tisch is more for the actor. I am more of a singer than an actor.

So let me get this straight. I can’t major in music and major in an area in a different school, such as in the arts and sciences?

no, you CAN double major in another school! (at least in CAS). It may be easier to be a double major in Steinhardt than in Tisch School of Drama (I don’t know for sure; just guessing). You can double major in CAS as a Tisch student, just logistically difficult fitting it all in.

Really? That sounds great. It would be a dream come true to double major in MT and something else at NYU. It also says on the website that the auditions can only happen after an NYU application has been submitted. Does that mean I have until the application deadline to audition? Or is there a rule that applications for auditioners have to be turned in sooner?

You have until Jan. 1 to submit the application to NYU. Your audition has to be on one of their audition dates either in NYC or in other cities where they audition. But you should line up the audition now if any dates are still available (people have been making their appointments ever since the appointment making procedure opened up on Oct. 1). You don’t need to file an application just to line up the audition appointment (the audition appointment should be made NOW) but you just have to file your application by Jan. 1.

In my opinion, having read your other thread on the MT Forum concerning prestigious colleges, etc…NYU/Tisch or NYU/Steinhardt may not be the best fit for you. You wrote about wanting to continue doing MT in college, but not for a career. I can’t tell if you know the difference between a BFA degree and a BA degree. All your other schools are BA degrees. Tisch is a BFA and Steinhardt is a BM, neither of which are like a BA.

While you say you want to double major in MT and math or science, at NYU this would NOT be like a double major at a regular college with a BA degree. For example, if you went to Yale, you could double major in theater and science. Each major would be approximately 30% of your coursework, as is the case for majors at most BA colleges. But at NYU, the MT major is a BFA or BM degree which means that approx. 65% of your coursework will be in MT. It will not be an “equally” balanced major with your math/science major which would be about 30% of your coursework (which also leaves barely any courses in anything else). A BFA or BM degree in MT is a huge commitment to a specialized degree program that constitutes a large chunk of your coursework and time (many more hours than BA coursework) at college and is most suited to those who want to focus primarily on MT and pursue work in the field after graduation.

In my view, based on what you wrote on the other thread, a college that has a BA degree in Theater where there are MT opportunities to take some voice and dance, and to be in musical productions, is more suited to your college goals (double major) and career goals (not MT), and to still being actively engaged in some courses and productions in MT. Yale, Brown, and Northwestern are three schools that come to mind in this regard.

Thanks for the info. I don’t know that I wouldn’t do anything with a degree in MT. I really don’t know at this point. It would be a dream come true but I don’t think I would be good enough. I guess you never know but it is just such a big risk.
