I was accepted into CIM as a BM in Violin Performance. However, I have also demonstrated interest in their Audio Engineering program. The problem is, I fear I won't have time to do both. Is there anyway I can declare a double major at the end of freshman year. Or should I not do it? I don't want to take anything away from my priority which is the violin. I would like to learn more about engineering because I want to be a versatile artist. And I also see it as a back up, although my friends say it is a cop out :p help, please?

Did you take a look at the layout of your 4 years in the performance program? Can you fit in the required course work for a double major? I would definitely do it if you can ONLY because it sounds like you are really interested in the engineering part. Forget what the friends say - it is your life. Not a cop out. Follow your own interests. Honestly - understanding the audio engineering can only add to your skills, even as a performance major.

Does CIM allow a double major? A lot of music schools do not. Does not sound like there would be a lot of overlap between Audio Engineering and Violin Performance. Is there a minor available in Audio Engineering? It would still probably be tough to find free credits to pick up a minor. Sounds like extra semesters/years in college to complete the double major.

Yeah that’s why I’m worried. Are there a lot of benefits to engineering?

There were a couple of string majors at CIM attempting that, but they’ve dropped it. You’ll be taking secondary piano, don’t forget about that, in addition to a load of theory, eurythmics (two years for instrumentalists), music history, orchestra rep class, chamber music, orchestra, etc. It is a very full course load and you want to keep your playing level for your end of year jury. You’re expected to be a full participant in your orchestra right from the first as well as play in your chamber group. There are chances, although not at the beginning, to play in special things such as composers recitals, etc.
Try e-mailing your studio teacher and your academic adviser to seek their opinions and to find out if you’d be allowed to declare a second major part way into the process.

Check out the course requirements online for your major. If your violin performance is a BM then there is likely not a lot of elective credits and therefore a double major would (almost) certainly require extra schooling. A BA would have more elective credits but would probably still require extra semesters or year(s) at school for a double major. Thus is the life of a music major!

I should reconsider then…I don’t want to spend extra years at a conservatory just for a major I might not use. I’ve even completed a list of grad schools I will apply to (in 4 yrs of course!)…I feel bad e-mailing the director of engineering but I should have thought about this earlier. I was too caught up in the excitement I guess. Oh well :p

Look up the requirements for the engineering major. Perhaps you could take a number of them over the summers.
