Double Majoring at Cal

Hi. I'm interested in double majoring at Berkeley. I intend to double major in English and Economics. I have a few questions though.

1) Should I be taking, or complete, the major requirements for both these classes at CC?
2) When I apply, do I apply for just one major (I'll probably apply as an English major as it is easier to be accepted), or do I need to state that I am double majoring?
3) Is it a good idea to double major? Is it just too much work?

Thanks!

That's weird--I'm trying to transfer to Cal and double major in Economics and English also.

Unfortunately I don't know much about how to go about doing so. What I do know is, when you apply to Berkeley you have to state your intended major as Economics, since it is an impacted major and you cannot switch into impacted majors once you get in. I'm guessing when you start at Berkeley you can try to declare English as a second major.

It's a lot of work and money. Probably an additional year's worth, since Economics and English don't have any lower div or upper div that overlap. Personally, I think if you want to do it, you should go for it. I think it's a great idea if you love both Econ and English. :)

Good luck,
BanditGirl

Oh, I forgot to mention--

You should try to complete as many of the English major requirements for Berkeley at your CC.

Thanks BanditGirl. That helps alot.

BTW, do you know just how difficult it is to major in Econ? What's the average GPA?

"Is it a good idea to double major? Is it just too much work?"

Depends. If you're going to get a job after you graduate then it could sound impressive and/or be a bargaining chip to get a higher starting salary. If your planning to go to professional or graduate school it could hurt more than help, depends on how well you do on the GRE/LSAT/MCAT and how high your GPA is. You would probably loose a spot to someone who has a better GPA and the same test scores even though they only minored instead of double majored.

It’s always good to challenge yourself but make sure the rewards are worth it.

From what I understand it's a bit difficult to get into Cal for Econ. I assume the average GPA is around 3.75 (or perhaps a little higher), because that's what UCLA's average admittance GPA for Econ is. But no matter what grades you have, you should always give it a shot. Write an out-of-this-world essay. Show them that they should want YOU instead of you wanting THEM. ;)

Hi. I'm interested in double majoring at Berkeley. I intend to double major in English and Economics. I have a few questions though.

"1) Should I be taking, or complete, the major requirements for both these classes at CC?"

Do the pre-reqs for both majors.

"2) When I apply, do I apply for just one major (I'll probably apply as an English major as it is easier to be accepted), or do I need to state that I am double majoring?"

You apply for one major then when you get in you go get a form to fill out that says your a double major.

"3) Is it a good idea to double major? Is it just too much work?"

To each his own. They give you five semesters to complete your course work if you are a double major (of course you can even exceed that). In any case, I though the English major at Cal was hard enough on its own...I can't imagine doing it with another major (Let alone Econ). In any case, I advise you to take all the available pre-reqs and if they are not available at your CC I'd say to take it at the nearest available CC just to get it out of the way...

Best, Cardinal :)

Thanks alot Cardinal. That was some great advice.
