Is anyone thinking about it? I am a Political Science major and I feel that it might be beneficial for me to attain an English degree or otherwise in order to increase opportunities in the future.

Any suggestions for majors that coincide well w/ PoliSci (obviously im not going to do chem or something, I have alot of pre-reqs for history completed as well as English)

How would I go about 'double majoring' in the event that I should have to establish it

I’m a current double major at Cal. My advice is don’t try to find a major that “fits” well with your major. First, only do it if you really love both subjects and can’t choose. Secondly, if you do insist that the two fields fit well together, only double major because you feel it is going to give you some new perspective on things for your own personal academic growth, not to impress graduate admissions. A double major is a ton of work and probably will not help your GPA. The difference in the amount of work and expectations at Cal compared to cc cannot be underestimated. Don’t let the first few weeks when you get there fool you into thinking that you don’t have to step things up a bit. Most transfers I’ve spoken to and myself made that mistake our first semester. A double major means double that effect.

That said, a double major has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had academically. The amount of what you learn at Cal is amazing, and learning both fields in depth just adds to that. But because you have so much reading here, you have to make sure that you are double majoring for yourself, and not for admission officers. Otherwise, it will be torture getting through the work. Hope that helps! :)

I really want to get into Cal. I have been busting my ass at San Diego CC for 2 years now. I went back for History, but then found that Poli Sci is one of my favorite subjects. I wanted to do just about every subject in the Social Sciences. This is when I discovered Anthropology. Cultural Anthro lets me explore ALL those areas.

I have pretty much switched my major to Anthro, but I still look back and miss History. I have been contemplating a double major. I know it will be a lot of work. Cal does not offer a minor in History from what I can find. They do offer a minor in Anthro, but I am not sure if I should switch back to History and just do the Anthro minor.

Either way, I really hope I get into Cal. I have a 3.94 GPA, TAP certified, but this semester is rough due to personal issues. My GPA will most likely fall a few points. Hopefully I do not get my first C this semester. :(

The double major thing is weighing on my mind. Glad this thread is here.

@CalBearGuy- if I don’t have many pre-reqs for linguistics (which I am sure I don’t) will they still let me declare a double major…or do they require that you meet certain standards?

Precious10- that is great advice. I do love to learn so I can tell you that I definitely wouldn’t be doing it to impress anyone. I would love to do rhetoric but my interest was sparked late in my cc career, what do you think about picking it up now? If not rhetoric, then possibly philosophy like you?

@mikei- It definitely is! I think the two compliment each other well.

@KelliC03- I came in with NO pre-reqs done for philosophy. Very few community colleges offer them for either rhetoric or philosophy. My advice is if you do decide to do this make sure 1: as many pre-reqs for your other major have been completed at your community college and 2: start taking only courses in both majors your first semester here.

While I am making good progress in both majors, I do not have any room to mess up my schedule, so do keep in mind that a double major will restrict the number of general interest courses you want to take. Hope this helps! :)

kelli, i too got in as a poly sci major and i have decided that i’m gonna either pair it up with ethnic or chicano studies depending on how i feel about it when i get there since right now im torn between the two

I’m thinking about double majoring in Media Studies and Psychology at Cal. I already have all the prerequisites for both majors. I don’t know how realistic it is to be able to finish it all up in 2 years. I don’t wanna stay for longer cause I’m an international student and have to pay a ridiculous amount in tuition per semester.

I also got in to UCLA for communication. It wouldn’t be possible for me to double major there, so I was thinking that instead I could just enroll in as many psych classes as possible, even though I’m not a declared psych major. But now I’ve understood that it can be difficult to access psych classes that way

Double majoring might end up being tons of work, but at least I get access to the classes I’m actually interested in taking. At UCLA I might have to enroll in a bunch of classes I don’t even wanna take?

Precious10- WoW! No pre-reqs done for philosophy? With that in mind, I will probably speak with my student adviser tomorrow about what my options are. I have a small number of psych classes, english classes, and history classes, so I plan on choosing between those three. As far as your second suggestion, what do you mean by “2: start taking only courses in both majors your first semester here.”?

Nadiavar- aahh, a fellow PoliSci major! I love it! btw, I saw your vid of your UCLA acceptance and it was so heartfelt! So your thinking about double majoring in PoliSci and ethnic or chicano studies? I honestly think ethnic studies might be more interesting…do you have reasoning for either? Are there more opportunities presented in one than in the other? I am definitely going to talk to my adviser about my options regarding what is available to me, then I will be looking into what each would bring to my career endeavors.

Hi KelliC03, I meant make sure there are no filler course in your schedule (except perhaps a 1 unit class to hit the 13 your first semester). If no pre-reqs are met, every course you take should be directed towards completing the major requirements. Also, go speak to the major advisors for both majors. They can help you spot classes that could be used for both majors, deadlines, etc. It’s really helpful if you can knock out two requirements with one class.

Applied Math (Economics) and Peace & Conflict Studies double major here. Both majors are prereq’ed!

I am NOT planning on graduating in two years (I’m going for 3.) Is anyone here planning on graduating in two years or 2.5 years with a double major?

Precious10- Ok, so I went to a political science adviser today and it was GREAT! My political science adviser basically told me what you did regarding the double major…she suggested that I find the adviser to the second major I am interested in (now I’ve just got to decide). Another option she presented was a minor, she explained that minor’s simply require less courses to complete and that it may be less daunting than a double major.
-She did add that I could take courses toward a second major and then declare later in the year, for instance if I was to take some history courses and enjoy it…I could apply as a double major in the Spring of 2010.
