Double Majoring at Columbia

Hi I'm very interested in Columbia and am definitely applying. I was just wondering if the Core Curriculum at Columbia makes it difficult to double major since I've heard it's pretty intense and takes up a lot of your schedule.

meh, I’m good friends with a econ-history-poli sci triple major, no double counting anywhere, he’s taking mostly 5 classes each semester and did not come in with an extra-ordinary amount of advanced placement (like skipped calc 1 and most the foreign language req). He just scheduled it well and is taking only his 3 majors + core, on track to graduate in 4 years. It’s easier than it sounds. I personally know many double majors in the college who had time to take fun classes as well. Others graduate in 3 years with a full major + almost all the core with 5-6 classes each semester. Normal class range is 4-6, with average being around ~5.

It really depends on the majors you want. If you’re in the college you’ll actually have much easier time, since major requirements are a lot lighter (~12 classes per major). I’m in SEAS, and we have more like ~18 classes per major, which makes double-majoring hard with just 5 classes a semester.

But you can definitely do it. My only real suggestion is decide early and plan accordingly.

Depends on your two majors. It’s easier if some of your requirements overlap with the Core (foreign language, Global Core, or science requirements).

I’m double majoring in English and bio and will just finish everything on time. I don’t think I planned my first two semesters well, so I have practically no room for electives. But if you start early, you should be fine. I did have a couple of six-class semesters, though, and it wasn’t fun.
