double majoring at Medill

Is it possible to double major if you go to Medill, or can you only minor in something other than journalism? I want to double major in print journalism and economics, has anyone done that? How tough is it to manage?

It is possible to double major in Medill. I have Medill friends who are double majors in history, political science, etc. Just talk to your advisor once you're admitted into Medill about the process.

The thing with Medill is that you don't get two degrees. You get a BSJ and on your transcript it says you fulfilled all the requirements for a second major. A lot of people double major/major and minor in Medill because we have a "concentration requirement" anyway, so many people just go the extra step and double major or minor. You don't need to know right away. I agree with tenisghs - talk to your advisor when you get here.

My brother is a medill junior, he said that they pretty much expect you to take a second major, because they want to train journalists who have something to write and report about. Makes sense if you think about it, I wouldnt want to get my news form people who knew nothing other than 'how to write the news'. Anyways, its pretty much expected of everyone in Medill. It might even be a requirement, I'm not sure of that, but I do know that almost everyone has a second major.

Secondly, If anybody has any insight on if and how my status as a "legacy" (since my brother is a current student (on the dean's list too)) will affect my chances for admission. I dont know if this will affect it, or if that only happens at small schools and Ivies. Thanks

oh okay.. what's your brother double majoring in? what kind of journalism is he planning to go into?

He does broadcast journalism, and is double majoring in anthropology. The school allows him plenty of time for both, so NU is a great school for people who want to be journalists but also have an interest they want to explore (or a backup career since journalism is so tough). He got to work at a TV station in San Antonio for a semester, and travel for months on research trips to Peru and Hungary (twice to hungary) and he'll still graduate in four years. Point is, they make it incredibly easy to double major, and having a second major does not at all detract from your education in journalism.

If you don't double-major, you can always take a minor.
Don't feel pressured to do a double-major if it does not fit in your schedule and goals.
