Double majoring. Business is not my "primary" major.

Hi. I'm planning to double major in English and Business, English being my primary major since I'm a second semester freshman and have already completed many of my A&S core requirements. Therefore, I will graduate with a B.A.

Do you think this will effect my employment opportunities in the future?

What field do you want to get into? What concentration in business are you planning to take?

Double majoring won't necessarily help or hurt you. The only way I see it as beneficial is that you want to become a column writer about business or do some kind of work related to writing such media or press releases.

I'll either do International Business or Marketing.

That's not what I was saying though. English is what I'm interested in, so I'm getting one major in that. There's obviously a good chance a career in English won't be a viable option, so the business major is a sort of safety.

I suppose my question should be, do you think that having a B.A. with a second major in business would be as good for employment opportunities as a B.S. in Busines?

I guess I am not clear on what you are talking about as a double major. I would assume that if you major in english and get a second major in business that your employment opportunities would be just as good as if you had just the b.s. in business.

Hi, I noticed that this thread was made in 2008, so I’m assuming that you know more about this now. Maybe you’ve even graduated. I’m planning to transfer somewhere so that I can double major in Marketing with a concentration in International Business and Japanese Language and Literature. Though if I weren’t interested in Japanese, I would’ve chosen Linguistics. The program I’m using to transfer requires me to have a primary major. I chose Japanese as my primary major since I’m thinking about the possibility of getting my Masters in Japanese. Like you, I decided on Business because I’m not sure how everything will go with Japanese after I’ve fully matriculated, but I know that Business will be useful to me no matter what.

I was wondering if, since you posted this in 2008, you’ve decided whether you’re choice to double major was good choice. I’m currently wondering if International Business is the best choice or if I should just go with Marketing and focus the rest of my attention on Japanese. But regardless of what I do, I want to end up working somewhere that will give me opportunities to work with foreign countries (Japan or at least Asia) so I think International Business would be better, but people keep telling me that International Business is extremely difficult and that the only job opportunities that arise with that major are extremely competitive ones that might be hard for me to get into. People have told me that a less specific degree like Marketing is probably a better choice (even though I think I might have difficulty trying to sell people products).

So I’m wondering if things went well with your double major. Would you suggest double majoring in Language and Business? Although I’m thinking about a foreign language, do you think there were any drawbacks to majoring in Language and Business? Or do you know what can be done with those majors, especially how I can get a job that would involve both Marketing and Japanese/Japan? Maybe it’s not really possible. . . .
