Double Majoring?..Help!?!?

Off hand- I can’t recall the exact names of his monologues. I do remember they were highly edited to fit within the time. One was from Chekhov (about harmless use of tobacco or something like that) and the other was from Neil Labute- which I never saw as he hated to show me his monologues (one of his lesser plays but Labute is becoming more and more popular- especially at NYU). For my daughter, I googled overdone monologues and printed off several sites with monologues listed. Then, I made sure not to chose any from those lists or I tried to find a play written by the same playwright. I also googled accepted audition material from several colleges. Not gonna lie, this is the hardest part of the whole audition process. Age appropriate means don’t chose a monologue that is usually delivered by an old man or by someone well above your age. Also, try NOT to chose ones filled with a lot of swearing. You may try googling plays with characters who are 17-25 in age and then cross reference that with the overdone monologue list. I don’t think it really matters how obscure the monologue is as long as you can show character development or that you connect with the character and can be engaging and feel what you are saying. I know- way easier said than done. My son’s acting teacher helped him but no one helped my daughter select her material. Make sure the material is from a published play and make sure you READ the play! Hope that helps!

@supportive this definitely helps…Do you think i have a chance of getting into NYU?..I also have other interest…i write, play piano, and do martial arts.

Trey- you know I can’t answer that but from what you say, it sounds like you may have good possibilities. The only way you’ll know is if you apply and audition. Just keeping word towards your goals!

My guess is to google the Top 20 MT programs and then don’t apply to them! Everyone we talked to at Unifieds was auditioning for NYU, CMU, CCM, Pace, Emerson, BoCo, Univ of Michigan… I’m no expert and others can chime in here but look at Elon, Coastal Carolina, Shenandoah, FSU, UCF, James Madison, Ohio Northern,(I’m sure I’m forgetting some here) … it all depends on if you want a conservatory or a true college atmosphere. I also don’t know how many audition for these programs and how many are accepted. Marin Mazzie and Jane Elliot went to Western Michigan and Sierra Boggess went to Millikin. I say look for the atmosphere you want and then try to find a program that fits. Don’t get too caught up in what everyone else thinks is a good program. A BFA offers great training and YOU make the program.
