Double Majoring in Bioinformatics and Neuroscience

Does anyone know if this is a difficult track to take? I don't know a lot about the Bioinformatics major. I am especially concerned that this might be an ill-advised path to take as a pre-med. I was just concerned that maybe Neuroscience wouldn't have enough math for me.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also, how does one go about changing majors or to a double major? When I applied and was accepted, I indicated Neuroscience as my major.

Thanks

You don’t need to declare a major until sophomore year. Even though you indicated neuroscience on your application, you’re not really officially in the major until you declare it later on. So if you still want to double major in neuroscience and bioinformatics by the time you’re a sophomore (at which point you’ll have an idea what classes in these subjects are like) you’d go to Thackeray Hall and declare them.

It looks like neuroscience and bioinformatics have some overlap but I think you’d be better off majoring in only one or the other. I glanced through the major requirements for both and despite the two having the core premed courses as overlaps, they otherwise don’t have any other classes in common. If you double major in both you’d end up with almost no electives. However, the best evaluator of if this is doable is yourself after you take some of the core courses in the majors. Other majors you might want to look into are molecular biology (which requires the most math out of all the biological science majors) or neuroscience with a CS minor. Or, you could just major in neuroscience and take additional math classes (you don’t necessarily need to major/minor in another subject to get more math exposure).
