Double majoring in economics: is it worth it?

Hi, I’m currently a sophomore at UC Berkeley. If I get into the Haas Business School here, I have to make a decision whether to double major with economics. The only reason I would want to do so would be to improve my career prospects. I’m currently looking into either accounting or investment management. I’ve heard that a good percentage of Haas students here double major in Economics, but I really don’t think it’s worth it. Here are the drawbacks I see to double majoring in Economics:

Economics is a fairly difficult major, more difficult than Business. Taking upper-division Econ classes along with my Business classes would certainly impact my GPA for both majors. I think that having a higher GPA is better than having 2 majors on my resume.

The Economics major would require me to take 6 upper division classes. The time that these classes take could possible be used for a work study job, or an internship at a firm in San Fran.

Does anybody have any ideas on this?

What's your career goal?

Well, I'm currently looking into either Accounting or Investment Management. I can't say too much more until I've actually experienced what a job in those industries is actually like. If you mean what kind of position I want, I'm not really interested in being a CEO or professor. I just want a secure job with advancement opportunities and that makes enough money for me to live comfortably.

You don't seem interested in it and it doesn't seem to be required. It seems you are interested in it since it seems to be the thing to do at your school. That is not much of a reason. Berkeley is rough enough on grading without adding that on top. If I were you, I wouldn't do it.

Certainly unnecessary for accounting, an argument could be made for investment management but not necessary with a Haas degree.
