I am currently attending IIT (Illinois) for my undergraduate degree in Computer Science. I recently just took a Finance class and absolutely loved it, I find the way money flows very interesting. I want to work on the technology side of the system in which money runs (banking, taxes, etc…) So, here is my big question, would double majoring in Computer Science and Finance have any beneficial value? Or be a complete waste of time?
I do not plan on picking up a minor in Finance because I rather take the extra 4-8 classes that are needed to pick it up as a major
No if you work in software development in areas not related to finance.
Some benefit if you work in finance.
Well whats the game plan? What do you want to do for a career?
It is certainly not worth taking extra time to graduate to do it. If you can take a few classes extra and still finish in 4 years it can be helpful. Let me point out that you do not need these classes to get into finance in some capacity. My son, who graduated from Illinois Tech in 2010 with a BS in Computer Engineering has been working in the financial sector since he graduated. He has been a operations engineer and now a software developer. If he wished to get more in the finance side he could take an MS in Finance to gain more credentials.
