<p>I've been trying to find schools where a double major between biology (thinking possible pre-vet not sure) and theater (BA) is possible. Preferably a suburban or urban location. Northwestern and Rutgers seem promising as well as UT Austin. Brown maybe (might be a reach though). I need ideas please!!</p>
<p>I am not positive (since we haven’t done it) but my son was told that this is possible at SMU (Southern Methodist University) in Dallas. He is interested in Chemistry also and not sure if he can physically do both but hour wise, the person we spoke to there showed us how it would be possible as long as you take full loads each semester. I would like to speak to someone though who has done it considering all of the hours it takes in a theater major for rehearsals and such. Might take more than 4 years if you don’t take a full load each semester.</p>
<p>thanks for your response! I have looked at that school and its a little too close to me. Plus it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of available financial aid and to go to SMU, I’d really need that. I hope it goes well for your son!</p>

<p>I just thought it was an interesting combo–I have no idea where you could do that tho. It’s possible at Chapman University (Orange, CA), but I don’t know anything about our bio dept. so not much help.</p>
<p>I would definitely recommend Northwestern. I was going to double major in theatre and bio, but then dropped bio, so I decided on a different school. It’s easy to double major in NU due to the quarter system. And their BA Theatre program is renowned and often cited as the best BA program in the country.</p>

<p>When I saw the title of this thread, I thought at first that I had posted it and just forgot! I’m in the same situation- from what I’ve heard, a BFA will simply not work with a strong interest in biology. Northwestern would be perfect, as would Brown, and Sarah Lawrence seems somewhat promising. But unless you have the time and cash to stretch out your college years to 5 or 6, a BFA program will be pretty tough.</p>

<p>Have you looked at the Carnegie Mellon BSA degree? You can choose from an arts concentration in the College of Fine Arts (Drama) and a science concentration from the Mellon College of Science (Biological Sciences). </p>

theater mom: for the drama concentration, it lists design, directing, dramaturgy, and production technology & management as the concentrations available. Acting and Musical theater aren’t offered. I also had called and talked to someone at their school. I was informed that it would be very hard to do an acting and biological sciences double major because of scheduling conflicts.

<p>just wanted to say: if a program like the BSA program at Carnegie Mellon was offered at another school but had a more general theater program i’d be interested in that. I know that finding at school that would just let me do acting and biology/pre-vet would be hard to come by, especially since I need $$$.</p>
<p>phoenix, it’s true that doing a double major at Tisch is difficult, but it is definitely possible. My D did it, as did several others she knew, and she graduated in four years.</p>
<p>If interested in Theatre and Biology, Muhlenberg is well worth looking at. The school has a very well regarded and active BA theatre program (as well as dance and voice) but at the same time is well known regionally for its very strong pre-med program that turns out many students who successfully pursue med school or grad school in biological sciences. It’s a small, competitive LAC that really seems to have a dual personality in terms of its reputation and most popular programs - science and performing arts.</p>
<p>really? in a major like biology and acting? i’m sorry if it sounds like I don’t believe you; it’s only b/c if such a thing existed, it would be what I’ve been looking for for the past I don’t know how long and would thus basically answer my prayers :)</p>

She was a drama major at Tisch and double-majored in English in CAS. She knew several people who double-majored, in a variety of subjects. As I said, it isn’t easy but it is possible to do it.</p>
<p>alwaysamom: Hmmm then Tisch is beginning to sound more promising. I could possibly double major but I probably wouldn’t be able to complete what I needed to in 4 years if I was seriously thinking abut vet school. But maybe something else to help animals? I don’t know, but it’s very helpful to learn that double-majoring at Tisch is possible!!</p>
