I start Cal as a 1st year this fall and want to pursue a double major in Media Studies and Rhetoric. I have no AP credit, but do have a Soc1 class I completed last year. There is absolutely no crossover coursework between the two majors so how will this affect my chances of a 4 year graduation. I want to try to finish both of the major's prereqs by the end of next summer so by fall 2010 I can declare both majors. Will this set me up ok?

Also, I heard a lot of negative things about Media Studies being fluff with sorority girls. I am a straight guy but I don't want to be at Cal with a negative conatation of being Media Studies. Really, honestly, is Media Studies really that bad?

I can’t do the work for you. Look up the Media Studies and Rhetoric department prerequisites and classes that are required for the degree. See if you can plan your whole college career out and if it fits 4 years.

As for MS reputation, yeah, it’s regarded as a fluff major. But, your major is what you make out of out. Nobody should tell you what you should and shouldn’t major in if you’re really passionate about it. I’m doubling with MS because I’m genuinely interested in it. No matter what you’ll still be a graduate of Cal, which is already good.
