Double Majoring

Is double majoring harder than it seems? Does it require longer to complete? Are the rumors true that you have to stay up all nights for weeks.

When you double in STEM is it really hard.

Depends on the school, the majors, who you are as a person, etc. What are you considering double majoring in?

LMU is the school, and double majoring in Physics and Mechanical Engineering. I am a diligent worker, but i sometimes slack off.

It really depends on you, the school, and the majors. I know some students double major in music and engineering for a practical reason. I also know students that double major in engineering and business (which can be overwhelming). I also know students double major in related but not necessarily overlapping fields in engineering. In some schools, it may be tougher to double major across campus (e.g. engineering and an LSA major) as one will need to fulfill the electives and graduation requirement for both schools.
If you do have a lot of AP/DE credits, you may still be able to graduate within 4 years with double major. My D is considering dual major in Material Science and Chemical Engineering that she only need 14-18 credits more than either major. As she would have 70 credits before sophomore year, she only need to take 12-14 credits per semester and can graduate with both degree within 4 years. That would be like taking 3 classes (or 2 classes plus a project) per semester.
While for totally unrelated fields, you may need to take 30 or more credits for the second major which may cost you an extra year.

I would not worry about it now until you get to college, see what you want to study etc. As long as you don’t overload on courses you should not have to stay up all night working. But I do agree that it depends on the school and the majors. A few examples…

  1. My S went to a Jesuit College which has a huge core curriculum. This made it difficult for students to satisfy the core curriculum and double major (although some managed to do it).
  2. If you want to double major in two different schools (ex. business school and liberal arts school) that could be difficult as the schools will have different core curriculums and you would have to satisfy both.
  3. My D’s liberal arts college has a flexible core curriculum and many students there double major and graduate in 4 years with no problem.
  4. It is easier to major in one subject and minor in another subject so that could be an option as well.

Thank you for your advice.

Thank you for your advice.

Is anyone right now studying at LMU and taking a double major?

Everyone has their own definition of what “slack off” means, but if you fall significantly behind in an engineering major you will face incredible difficulty in catching back up. Usually that’s when kids throw in the towel and say ‘engineering isn’t right for me’

@mikemac
Oh no! Not that slack off. Like not study for 1 quiz and minor stuff like that. I have a great study routine and a great work ethic. I am just a little lazy for a quiz in a semester. I am really diligent, and I do not tend to put work away. This is not the problem for me.
