Would I be allowed to major in (materials) engineering and major or minor in philosophy?
They are from different schools within UF, so I’m not sure if this is allowed.
The info on their website only seems to talk about CLAS majors:

I am committed for the class of 2022, btw!
I’m guessing I should just meet with an advisor ASAP…
It will be very difficult to double major, especially with that pair.
A minor in Philosophy is very much an option (it’s 15 credits).

UF has Double Majors, Dual Degrees and Second Majors. It looks like you would be pursuing a “second major”.

You would need to get approval. If you’re bringing in a large number of AP/DE/IB/AICE credits (you can bring in up to 45 credits), then it “may” be an option. Keep in mind that a MSE degree takes 125 credits and classes have to be taken in order. The large number of engineering courses that are prerequisites make it difficult to make progress on your engineering degree, while also making progress on a second major.
Yeah even the major is just 33 credits… I would totally be okay with staying an extra semester or two to learn more about philosophy, which I am very interested in @Gator88NE
I have no problem with you spending the extra time and learning philosophy!
You do have to work it out with the College of Engineering and CLAS, and they both have requirements around “progress toward graduation”. Rolling in with a bunch of GenEds out of the way, via AP/DE/IB/AICE credits, make it a lot easier to pull off.
At the same time, the effort to complete a double major, takes away time that you could be spending on other stuff. You’ll find that as an engineering major, your number one resource is TIME. How much time do you spend on your demanding engineering classes, how much time on clubs, design teams, research, having fun, etc? Taking classes to work on your 2nd major, means you will take fewer MSE electives. It’s all a balance.
An English major will have far more time available to double major in philosophy, than an engineering major, simply due to the nature of each major.
