Is Double Majoring in general complicated?
Hoping to double in Computer Science and Motion Picture Science. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!
Hoping to graduate on time - would this cause me to need to stay an extra year, or are students easily able to complete a dual degree in 3/4 yrs?
Hello - My son is at RIT this year as a freshman and is a CS student. I think anything is possible and that you should reach out to your advisor when assigned to discuss this possibility. Getting out on time will likely depend on how many college credits you are transferrring in, if any, and how many classes you are willing to take at any given time. My son transferred in a lot of college credits and I will tell you the first semester of computer science was pretty challenging for him…not the computer science class itself, but all of the math classes/other classes. He also took too many credit hours…I would not advise to do this. Thankfully my son held it together and did well, but mid-way through the semester he was questioning his choice to take an extra class…his friends had “free time” and he didn’t. He’s taking a normal credit hour load this semester and he seems much happier. Good luck!
@Jayman0204 what math did your S start at? We are thinking our S will transfer credits in for all of the requed calc which may help but not sure.
Good point on the not doing extra especially first semester. Mine is hoping to do the extra year and get his masters and we hope the credits essentially make that a free year. He is planning on a music minor.
My child is considering doing this as well if he chooses RIT. He will likely start as a sophomore due to AP credits which would help. He had a 5 on the Calc B/C AP so will be able to skip the two RIT calc classes.
@letsgowv we are hoping for the BC 5 as well for the same reason. He did get a 5 on the AB. Also looking at probable sophomore status which we hope will help.
@eandesmom my son started with Project Based Calculus 2 and Discrete Math for computing, and this semester he is taking probability and statistics which he enjoys. We were warned from some friends whose daughter attended our high school, went on to Purdue, and jumped ahead in math…they told our son “don’t do it with the calc…get the foundation from your college”. He did not want to lose the credit hours he was transferring in so decided to proceed. It could just be our high school that did not prepare our students enough for the leap. RIT will have your child take a math test in the summer that will also help to determine placement.
@Jayman0204 so are you saying he tested out of Calc 1 and started with Calc 2? In theory S19 could skip calc entirely, which seems like a good thing, he’d start with discrete math. He has the credits now to skip calc 1 but the calc 2 will depend on the BC test score.
Even if you did take calc 1 though, I would think the AP credits would still count…just as a free elective. Is that not the case?
My son is in AP Calc BC this year, but his current plans (regardless of how he does on the AP Exam) is to start with Calc 2 at RIT, not wanting to jump right into Multivariable Calc or Differential Equations without having taking some Calc at the college level.
@eandesmom My son started with project based calc 2, skipping project based calc 1 (there are regular calc 1 and calc 2 classes, but for comp sci he had to take project based calc). All AP classes and college-in-high school classes that my son took transferred in without issue.
@Jayman0204 yes, he would have to take project based calc as well. However since there is no more calc after project based 2 for the CS major, it seems it might be wise to take the credits and run according to some
But we will see. I do want him to have a good foundation and if calc 2 is really helpful for discrete math, stats or linear algebra than I am sure he will take it.
