Double Minor Confusion

Hey all,

I want to minor in engineering and economics from Princeton, and i was wondering if it is slightly easier to get accepted if I were to apply to their engineering school because that is not a field that they are known for (not in top 10 by most studies). And how exactly does getting a double minor work? Do you apply to both the economics and engineering schools get into BOTH, or can you just get into one and apply for the other in a year or two? And would getting into one increase the chances of getting into the other?

Thanks

It seems that you aren't very familiar with the way Princeton works. First of all, you do not apply to individual schools, you simply indicate your intended major (whether AB or BSE) on the application. This isn't binding, and it won't significantly alter your changes. Also, you can't minor or double major at Princeton. What you can do is take classes across departments to fulfill distribution requirements, or pursue a certificate in one of those fields (I would recommend applying for engineering and getting a certificate in Finance).

Also, check out Princeton's program in Operation Research and Financial Enginnering (ORFE). It is a really cool program that combines economics with engineering, and it may be what you are looking for.

Hey, thanks a bunch for the advice.

I checked out the ORFE program that you were talking about, and it is EXACTLY what I want. I want to be an investment banker that specializes in engineering, and the ORFE program trains students for exactly that.

How would I tell them that I want to be in that program? Do I say that in the engineering essay, or do I apply to it later after I finish the prerequisites?

Also (sorry for the barrage of questions...), do you know if there's anything that I can do to increase my chances of getting in besides improving test scores or basic ec's? For example, are there any special programs or certain extracirrcular things (like a job at a business/engineering firm) that'll stand out specifically for that program?

Thanks so much!

I'll answer the easy question first: to indicate you are applying for that major, just list it as your #1 choice for prospective major (they give you 3 choices). You can also write about the ORFE program and how it fits your goals in the engineering essay...that is exactly what they are looking for. As for any programs that would boost your specific admittance, IDK. Maybe an internship? It is a little late for that though, so if you can't find anything I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hope that helps.
