Double Music Major

I will soon be starting my first semester majoring in instrumental music education. I auditioned on my primary instrument, French horn, and was fortunate enough to receive a full scholarship. This summer, I decided to get a head start on private lessons offered through the university. Because of my love for singing, and with the encouragement of my family, I decided to take summer voice lessons in addition to summer horn lessons. So far, I love working with my instructor and am showing some real promise as a beginner.

After some thought, I realized that adding a second major in voice performance would require only one additional semester. I should note that I can graduate in six semesters with the instrumental music education major alone. If I were to pursue a second major, it would not cost me anything as my scholarship is recurring and allows for all music courses for as many as four years (if needed).

Should I follow this second major? I wonder if majoring in both instrumental music education and voice performance would allow me to work as a choir director (if I cannot find an opening for a band director). Should I only pursue voice performance as a minor?

Thank you for helping me here! :)

I would chat with one of the voice teachers and/or chorus directors at your new school. You might want some sort of chorus major rather than a VP major. Congrats on your scholarship and fantastic opportunity!

Dan many students in my son’s music ed program double major with an instrument and voice because it does make them more marketable. Most most music ed programs for voice do offer the choral track for music ed classes. It sounds like it will be a good fit financially, too!
