When we were at summer orientation last year, the head of Residence and Student Life explained the housing assignment process.

You either pick a single or double. Usually there are slightly more requests for doubles than singles, so occasionally one who requested a double won't get it, but generally if you request a single, you will. This could change each year, however.
If I recall correctly, he said it it pretty random yet methodical process. I don't think it has anything to do with priority whether you did early decision or not. He said they pull a name up, find out if that student wants a single or double, and then pull out a number of a single/double room (whatever was requested) and fill in that number. I am sure there is some way to account for the roommate type preferences, but there are very few items on the housing form so I don't think they can fine tune it very carefully. It basically sounded like a purely random assignment process--names and dorm room numbers pulled out of a hat basically. If you request a double and want a specific roommate, there is a procedure for that. Otherwise, it sounds like you can't request any particular building.
