Double or Single?

When we were at summer orientation last year, the head of Residence and Student Life explained the housing assignment process.

You either pick a single or double. Usually there are slightly more requests for doubles than singles, so occasionally one who requested a double won't get it, but generally if you request a single, you will. This could change each year, however.
If I recall correctly, he said it it pretty random yet methodical process. I don't think it has anything to do with priority whether you did early decision or not. He said they pull a name up, find out if that student wants a single or double, and then pull out a number of a single/double room (whatever was requested) and fill in that number. I am sure there is some way to account for the roommate type preferences, but there are very few items on the housing form so I don't think they can fine tune it very carefully. It basically sounded like a purely random assignment process--names and dorm room numbers pulled out of a hat basically. If you request a double and want a specific roommate, there is a procedure for that. Otherwise, it sounds like you can't request any particular building.

I think that "incident" was in Hemingway.

The double housing assignment isn't random. When you get on campus you will see very few pairs of kids from the same city, much less the same state rooming together.

Is it possible to sign up for a double (so I have priority and they are in such short supply) and then decide later on if I want a single, forfeiting my double to someone who asked for one and was given a single?

Are you guaranteed a single if you request it?

Since slightly more people usually request doubles, a request for a single is normally a sure thing.

go for a single... you make real friends... not ones that will just drink with you.

[I go out and party 3+ nights a week and im an engineer living in kissam.] I wouldn't trade my single room for anything. plus all the girls on my hall are friends ill have for life.

housing royally screwed me for next year though... im not even going to say where they put me:(.
