I am currently a 9th grader in Algebra 1 CP and I am doing excellent in it so far. I got a 96 first marking period, 98 second marking period, 99 mid term, and a 101 third marking period (extra credit). My teacher recommended me for Geometry Honors, but she said I can double up and take Geometry CP and Algebra 2 Honors. I am highly considering doing this, as I will be on an honors path and reach Calculus, but the problem is, will I be able to cope with the amount of work given to me?
I have a pretty busy schedule next year considering that I’m going from an all CP schedule
Freshman Schedule (CURRENT SCHEDULE)
Algebra 1 CP
German 2 CP
World History CP
English I CP
Environmental Science CP
Sophomore Schedule
Geometry Honors OR Geometry CP & Algebra 2 Honors
German 3 CP
United States History 1 Honors
English II CP
Biology Honors
I heard Biology Honors is a tough subject, and so is Algebra 2 Honors. I have a strong interest in math, and I really like Algebra. Do you think I should double up, or stick to just Geometry Honors?
IMO, Honors Biology and Hobors Geometry are really, really easy; that said, my geometry teacher is amazing and my bio class has almost no out-of-class work.
That is interesting. Biology Honors is to be one of the toughest subjects in my school, but that is only because a bunch of Freshman’s take it and underestimate how hard it is. Sophomore’s come in knowing how hard the subject is, thus getting better grades. I think Algebra 2 Honors is the best choice for me, I am just wondered that it will be too much work. Geometry might be annoying for the times I want to study Algebra, but I heard Geometry CP is easy in my school
Could you take something over the summer or at least study using an online program so that some of the work during the semester is already familiar to you?
Yeah, I am thinking of self-studying Geometry over the summer, and Algebra 2. My school requires you to take Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 in school.
^I agree with Bopper. THAT (#7) would be your ideal schedule.
In fact, taking English Honors is more important than taking Biology Honors, because English will be useful for every single class you take. The ability to read effectively and to write well will be very very useful regardless of what you do.
Are you thinking of going into a STEM related major? I ask that because I always knew my son was going to go into something science or math related… and the one thing I wish I could re-do is the math tract he was on in high school. We moved from Florida to Georgia at the beginning of his 9th grade year. Because of the way his school in GA does their classes (on block schedule), he wasn’t able to transfer his year of algebra that he took in Florida. If we could go back and re-do it, I would have him double up in math his sophomore year. So many colleges look at course rigor, and it would have helped him so much to be as far along in math as possible. Sophomore year would be the best year to do it too, as opposed to junior year when he was taking more AP’s overall. He could definitely handle it and it sounds like you can too.
Thank you. I am definitely doubling uo. Sadly, I can’t take English II Honors, as I don’t meet the criteria (95+ final average, only have a 90). I am thinking of going into a major involving the study of math and science, but I definitely like math more. I think I can handle it, but it is going to be really tough.
