My guidance counselor and the science chairperson refuse to let me double up on sciences. I got a 750 on the SAT 2 Biology exam and they refused to let me double up after I showed that I could. They said I could double up next year last year and now say it was the new year. WHAT SHOULD I DO? Please help as soon as possible.
Find another class to take.
@happy1 They don’t let me because they classes must be taken in a specific order. I need a way to convince them to let me double up with some good reasons.
You have not provided enough information. What was the reason they gave?
From your other thread, I’m assuming you are a sophomore. I’ll further assume you are in NYS if you did not take bio as a freshman.
It’s school specific, but in many schools, sophomores have little leeway in taking anything other than required courses,
Additionally, some schools give preference to a course to those of the target grade, and younger students can only get in if space is available,
Finally, the school may require bio as a prereq to chem.
Without knowing details, it’s hard to say. But at the end of the day, it may be a case of “their school, their rules.”
It is highly unlikely that the school will break its own rules for one student.
@skieurope They gave no reason. They keep on telling me that I can’t double up and give no reason why I’m not allowed to double up sophomore year. If I could, I would show images of their responses.
My daughter’s high school wouldn’t have allowed doubling up in sciences in sophomore year either. No exceptions. They felt it was too much to have two lab courses. Sometimes they know for experience with their teachers and curriculum.
Move on and find another course to put in its place.
@momofsenior1 However I have proof that it wouldn’t be too much for me from my 750 Biology score with school help.
- Two lab courses is alot
- They want to set you up for success
- They may not have other courses for you to take in the future if you take them all now
- Scheduling may be difficult…if you are trying to mix sophomore and junior classes for example.
- there is no need to take two sciences…if you really need to do it senior year with APs
- They may have pre-requisites defined for each class
How does getting a good score on a test for one subject prove that you could handle doubling up?
@bopper I really do need to have my senior year for APs because I have tiger parents who want a short 2-4 years of learning in college in order for me not to pay off a huge loan. So I really need some APs.
@ahardboiledegg I want to double up on the subject that I got a good grade on. I took Biology SAT and I want to not waste a year and take chemistry with biology in order to save time and learn more.
You have your answer from the school and it is no. Take a other course in the spot and move on. No one student is above the rules a HS sets forth (and nobody here knows if the rules are in place due to school schedueling//teacher constraints, a desire to protect students from overloading, or anything else). FWIW my local HS only allows sophomores to take one history AP.
If your parents are unhappy with the decision they should contact your guidance counselor. But I the subject is closed as far as I can see.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: I agree with @happy1. Closing thread.
