I was planning on applying early decision to UPenn because I love it. I love the campus, the city, the food carts, the clubs, the toast-throwing atmosphere, and what I've heard about the people there.

However, I'm interested in pursuing journalism in the future and UPenn only offers journalism as a minor. I researched the Daily Pennsylvanian (and how I can continue journalism through this) and I've found some evidence as to why having a lack of a journalism major could be beneficial (opportunity to explore interests).

When I was writing my "why" essay, however, I felt like I was almost forcing myself to believe the benefits of just a journalism minor. People have asked me why I don't just go to a school like Northwestern, with a journalism school. I know I love journalism and I do want to major in it. I also know I love UPenn and I want to go there.

Only apply early decision if you’re 100% certain you want to go there. Seems like you are not. Why not apply to a school with a non-binding early action policy? Think this over really well.

Many great journalists are graduates of schools without formal jounalism programs, such as the Ivies, top liberal arts colleges, etc. An undergraduate journalism degree is definitely NOT a requirement.

Also, Penn has another unique asset in which a budding journalist might be interested (and at Penn, many are), the Kelly Writers House:

Lots of journalism-related programs are presented there, and it’s quite an extraordinary place.

And another great Penn asset for aspiring journalists is the Annenberg School for Communication, and its Annenberg Public Policy Center (operator of FactCheck.org, among other programs). Both are right there in the middle of campus, and offer courses, internships, and research opportunities that would be extremely relevant to someone interested in journalism:

thanks 45 Percenter for the links! I also found that quote before and now I feel much better about my choice to apply ED there (: There are still so many opportunities for someone interested in journalism and I’ll get the added bonus of exploring other things that I’m interested in! There will always be sacrifices, but ultimately the opportunity cost of not applying to a school I’m in love with is less than the lack of a journalism major.

@Metrical, I was thinking of applying early action instead of ED, but none of the EA schools really attracted me like UPenn did.
