Doubts about supplement essay

Hey guys! I am an international student applying to Michigan and I just have a doubt about one of Michigan supplement essays. The prompt is -

Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

my question is do they mean an actual club/organization or is it more fluid than that?

if its not about an actual organization, i was thinking about being the guitarist for my school band (we play couple of times a year for school functions and stuff) but if its an organization, I am kinda screwed :P

any replies will be greatly appreciated :)

This is a broad enough prompt that I would approach it by first identifying an aspect of my life or interests that I want to share with the admissions committee, and then that work particular trait or passion into an essay that fits the prompt. This should be an introspective essay that describes something within you rather than just describing your activities in further detail.

They don’t necessarily mean a formal organization and they are trying to get away from items might would appear on your resume. It can be any group of people at all, but the focus should be on you. You could discuss something that sets you apart like being a vegetarian in a family or school full of meat eaters, or a book reader in a community of athletes. Or, your role and personal growth in a community with which you closely identify like your religion, political beliefs or activism for a cause. As you suggested, you could discuss the part you play within a group of your friends who share an interest, or a hobby you share with a community of enthusiasts. But, whatever you choose, make it personal and revealing.

It doesn’t have to be serious right? Because I can write about how I research all the trivia on imdb about every movie that I’ve ever watched and how that shows my drive to know everything about a certain topic?
That was just an off the top of my head topic so sorry if it’s really stupid :P

i just realized that was a very stupid idea :P
