So I’m a transfer student who is attending UAlbany. Recently around October, I changed my major from Chemistry to biology with minor in chemistry and math. I’m having doubts if I want to do a math minor. Do you think its worth it do minor in math? My major in biology only requires calculus 2 which I’m taking right now. I feel like I’m pushing my limits to do something I can do but may struggle towards the end. I’m 100 percent sure not changing my major again and will likely just graduate with Biology with Chemistry minor. I’m thinking of doing pharmacy school since I hear that many people say, “Pharmacy school will take anyone”. Is that a true fact? Or I could take the pharmaceutical route and go to grad school.
All I want to do is work in a lab environment where I can 1)do research 2) do lab experiments on blood samples 3)work at a hospital and 4) be happy.
I could either do Biochemistry, chemistry for grad school. Although, I feel like pharmaceutical will relates to biochemistry and chemistry
What is the reason you want to do a math minor in the first place?
If you want to work in biological or medical science, it would be a good idea to take some statistics, because many research papers in biology and medicine make use of and assume knowledge of statistics.
My math minor was necessary because I wanted to do grad school in meteorology. Then I realized I never really took a course in Meteorology and by that, I have no idea if I will like it or not. My passion is Chemistry and probably will be biology as well in the near future when I start taking General biology 1 in the fall.
I don’t think minor in math will make much difference in your career path. As @ucbalumnus suggested, if you have a room in your schedule, I would take a few courses outside of sciences…stats, economics, business, humanities.
Depends on the person really, I found Calc II MUCH easier than Calc III (math major). But if you don’t want or need to minor in math, it’s fine to drop the minor.
Have you thought about a Physics minor? That might require some higher level math than calculus II since Physics is math.
You might wanna take a meteorology course so you can see for yourself if this is something you wanna do in graduate school. If so then a math or physics minor would be beneficial for that path.
Some of the good pharmacy schools are probably competitive.
hopefully you can make up any math or science courses you didn’t take in undergraduate school in graduate school if you decide to do a major in graduate school that requires math beyond Calculus II such as meteorology or Engineering. I know you never mentioned interest in Engineering but it’s good to be flexible in what kind of options you might have. Good luck to you.
Somewhat in between. Honestly, If I was very interested in weather I would definitely stay and continue my studies in math. The problem is that I never really took a course in Meteorology or any related courses. I don’t have any electives left to take. Although Two classes were offered next semester I could take related to weather. The problem was that it was all online. My mom said It would be too much for me to handle. She said that for a student like me who struggles it would be best to take all courses in person so that I could ask questions in person.
