Douglass- New Gibbons

I've been assigned Douglass New Gibbons A for this year...
I'm an Engineering student and I heard it was like a 40 minute bus ride to busch...

is the dining hall far?/good?
Are there parties?
How far are bus stops and how far is it from other campuses?
Are there pools/gym?

And i heard from my friend that its about 90% female?

How big are the dorm rooms?

thanks

tyreece

It can take a while to get to Busch (considering Busch is on the Piscataway side of campus and Douglass is on the New Brunswick side). As for the “40 minute ride,” I’m not sure it will take that long, but do make sure to plan your time accordingly.

The Neilson Dining Hall is one of the best on campus in my opinion (though I heard the new Livingston’s Dining Common might catch up). It is not too far of a walk from New Gibbons; it’ll probably take less than 10 minutes on a good day.

Don’t worry about the bus stop being far, as there’s a bus stop right in front of New Gibbons.

As for recreational activities in New Gibbons, you’d have to take a bus to the C/D Rec Center since it’s on Cook Campus.

Your friend is partially right in implying that most of the residents are female; this is because New Gibbons is on the Douglass campus (women’s residential community). However, males are placed here as well. I can’t say how big the dorm rooms are because I have yet to live there too (I’m just familiar with the C/D campus). According to the “ruoncampus” website though, the rooms are 13x16. Though i couldn’t provide the last bit of information, I hope I helped!

The bus ride can depend on the time. During rush hour, around 3:00 or 4:00, route 18 can have quite some traffic, making the bus ride a little longer than normal. But sometimes, there isn’t traffic, and the ride is just as quick as going from College Ave to Busch (the REXB bus drivers go really fast, they stay in the left lane :stuck_out_tongue: ). It’s a little unpredictable.

Do you think its difficult for guys to live in New Gibbons?

I heard Cook/Douglass isn’t that bad at all except the fact that you have to take bus to your classes if you’re an engineer. It’s not 90% females; yes, Douglass College is for women only, so you’ll see a lot of girls there, but there’s also Mason Gross where all the musicians are. You’ll see plenty of guys as well - equal balance.

Neilson on Cook/Douglass has really good food - supposedly better than that of Busch -, so you’ll have no problem satiating your appetite there.

For parties, Cook is right next to College Ave, so you probably won’t have any trouble finding parties to attend.

There is Cook Douglass Recreation Center on Biel Rd where you can work out and do whatever that pleases you.

i heard the commute from there to Busch at certain times is CRAZY

It will take around 40 minutes. walk to red oak lane, and take REXB and i think that is the fastest to get to busch. I dont think a bus goes from new gibbons to red oak lane

Hi, engineering + Douglass student who actually had to take the REXB every weekday last year. None of my classes took place during rush hour so I don’t know what the commute to Busch is like during that time (I did come back at rush hour, and I do think it took about 40 minutes which includes waiting for the bus, but I never really paid much attention…) but I did have a lot of experience at other times of the day so here’s my two cents.

Basically, from the college hall stop which is the last stop the REXB makes on Douglass to the Hill Center which is the first stop on Busch it takes 10 minutes. Buses tend to be 12 minutes apart from 7am-9pm, and then 22 minutes apart from 9 to 11pm. Your best bet living in New Gibbons is taking the F or EE that stops right in front of your building or walk to the College Hall stop. As I said, it’s the last stop before leaving Douglass and the red oak lane stop tends to be where the bus drivers take a break so you have to wait around for quite a while if you board there.

I always left about 30 minutes before my classes started and I’d usually get to the classroom ~15 minutes early, but then I was dorming in Jameson so it was quite a bit closer walk to the college hall bus stop.

You’ll move in a bit before the rest of campus, just time yourself walking from your dorm to the college hall stop and then add 22 minutes (the worst case scenario if you just miss a bus + the bus ride) to that time to estimate when you have to leave before class.

As to the other questions:

For most people it’s a toss up whether the Busch or the Cook dining hall is best at Rutgers. Your going to spend a ton of time in both so you’ll figure out which one you like more soon enough.

No clue about parties, listen to other people’s responses.

For bus stops, the college ave buses stop right in front of your dorm. For livingston and busch you need to get over to the college hall stop.

Cook/Douglass has a really nice gym and pool at the rec center. You do not have to take a bus to get to it. Cook/Douglass is essentially one integrated, walkable campus. Just consider the walk your warm-up for your exercise routine.

You’re closer to the Cook side of the campus so there are plenty of guys. Nielson dining hall always felt like a 50/50 split between male and female to me, which was always a nice change after the Busch dining hall which seemed 80% male 20% female.

Room size according to Rutgers housing is as follows “Average Room Size: 13 X 16.”
