What's the consensus on downloading music using your school's internet in the dorms? I've heard there are serious consequences...What can anyone with experience say?

No experience personally but from friends / sisters i've heard the following: some schools have programs where they pay big fees to let their students dl for free, to avoid legal trouble for the school -- ive also heard some kids get in lots of trouble, but only after stern warnings -- and some schools just throttle bandwidth or block ports so that certain programs will have lots of trouble running (see kazaa / any torrent program) ... there are always ways around it though ... you should check out mytunes redux -- if you're at school you'll almost certainly be networked to a TON of kids, especially in the dorms -- and that lets you dl music directly from their itunes, so no trouble for you there ;)

A friend of mine got a letter from someone... I forgot if it was the school or the company. They told him to stop downloading or they'll take legal action.

If my school catches you, you get an e-mail that basically says "If you download anything else using "X Illegal Program" you will no longer have access to ______'s network."

However, I only know of one person who's received that e-mail and I've downloaded a ton of music and never gotten in trouble.

lol...at my school it is pretty serious ( or so they tell us)..in any case I don't download when I'm there...I just wait till I'm at home ( costa rica) where I can basically ignore copyright laws lol, and I download my ass off here

Some clients, such as DC++, make it virtually impossible for the school to see exactly what you are downloading (they can see how much bandwith you use regardless). Some schools have extensive DC++ hubs set up where students share absolutely massive amounts of data, and are not caught by the school. Other programs, like Limewire, make it exceedingly easy to catch people sharing files.
