Downloading on campus

Hi guys. Can anybody tell me how strict College Park's policies on downloading is? Is it safe to download music and movies from different websites and/or use torrents on campus? Do they monitor everything or pretty much overlook that sort of stuff? Can they check our laptops? I know it's illegal but I'm just curious. If you don't want to discuss it here please feel free to PM me
Thanks a bunch

“I know it’s illegal”. Yep, it is. Just ask the people who have actually been prosecuted. Uh…don’t think UMD has any other particular policy other than it is illegal.

No one I know uses limewire on campus, so I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure rapidshare works (but it might be a different one). Best bet is to watch movies online, or use the activities window in safari. In firefox there’s an add-on that creates a link on all youtube videos to download as mp3. (Doesn’t seem to work for universal music group videos)

DS uses safari too and watches everything on line.

Downloading programs–limewire, kazaa, etc–are all blocked on the university’s wireless. I would avoid torrents and just use websites like 4shared (good for music especially), or watch stuff online, as others have said

be careful because my friend downloaded movies, music, things of that sort via torrents and UMD emailed him because somehow it was tracked down to his computer that he was doing this. A company emailed UMD and UMD emailed him. All he had to do was to delete the program from his computer.

i use www.zippysharemp3.com to download music
i likemostly rap and dance music for me

you dont have to download a program like limewire, just grab songs from the internet
free= good :)

As far as I know the first time you get caught there is a warning.

Really not much you need to torrent as you can a lot of stuff online. I’ve had had utorrent running a few times in the background (just didn’t notice) and it was downloading and uploading. Nothing really happened. I’ve had roommates who were torrenting huge files and never got caught.

Like all things it’s pretty much your choice. There’s always a risk.

I’ve never been caught with vuze. But I don’t make a habit of using it on campus.
It takes forever though, unless you use an ethernet cable.

I tend to stick with www.zippyshare.eu for all of my downloading of music, you just download the files straight from your web browser so there is no torrents involved and I have yet to be caught or anything like that. :)
