I'm in the midst of scheduling auditions right now and figuring out which schools are going to be live, regional, or recorded. I'm just wondering, are there any negatives to attending a regional audition as opposed to a live audition? If specifics help, I'm talking about Lawrence Conservatory and the Chicago College of Performing Arts @ Roosevelt. Are most regional auditions just video-recorded and sent back to the school for review? And if that's the case, then isn't it easier just to send in a CD/video? Any help is much appreciated.

My child was accepted from a regional audition, recorded by one person who basically said asked for the required music, asked a few questions, and expressed thanks for coming. But that wasn’t for either of the schools you mentioned so it could be different for you.

I think most regional auditions are recorded though.

D did a regional audition for Lawrence Conservatory–it was video-recorded for later evaluation at Lawrence. Result: denied. D did in-person at Roosevelt (the day after Eastman in person). Result: accepted at Roosevelt and at Eastman, happily attends Eastman. Conclusion: Who knows? Probably fate…?

If you can go in person, then do. You can see the campus, talk to students, observe classes and lessons, maybe take a sample lesson, or at least meet/observe studio teachers. Good luck!

I’d say it’s always better to see someone in person, i know some say there’s no preference but i think regional would be better than a dvd, all of my auditions have and will be regional/dvd except for one and I have no worries about it. they wouldn’t have the option if there was a significant difference in choosing who attends. not everyone can shell out the money to go to every school

My son was admitted to Eastman through a regional. However, I think it helped that he had visited the school 2 months before the audition and had a lesson with his teacher of choice.

But my chance should not be dramatically lowered if i do a regional audition for eastman without visiting any teachers before…right?

I don’t think so. Eastman sends a representative from admissions to regional auditions. All the auditions are videotaped and you will be asked to play pretty much everything on your repertoire list. You will also take a theory exam and have a group meeting with the admissions rep. I don’t think that the experience is that much different from a live audition other than there is no interaction with the faculty.

I see, well that’s a relief. So there is only one person at the regional audition and we have the chance to meet with him/her? It would be nice if he/she can get to know more about my personality and passion…etc.

There will only be one person at the Eastman regional in my experience. However, that person will not have much, if any, influence on your acceptance. That decision is pretty much made by the music department. Admissions only really makes a recommendation based on your academic record. So meeting the person who comes out to do the regional is not going to make any difference.

In my experience, most of the time the person there at the regional is a just a proctor, and the recording of your audition is just given to the people who need to hear it (the head of the studio). If I remember right and you’re from Michigan, I’d say do your best to head to the live audition. Chicago’s very doable and Appleton isn’t too far, and it helps to meet the professors. Marty Erickson’s a really nice guy. Where exactly would a regional audition for Roosevelt be? Normally I’ve had to go to Chicago to DO regional auditions.
