There is the money equation too. Recently, Cornell and another Ivy Leaguer (Penn or Columbia) got something like a hundred millions dollars from some Asian Indian guys. I won’t be surprised if Kim can find this kind of guys in Asia. He can probably broaden the donor base than a traditional white guy, but only time will tell.

He is chairman of a department at Harvard School of Public Health, which I would venture qualifies as “higher education”. Everything he does there - budget management, infrastructure development, oversight of graduate education, fund raising, and particularly care and feeding of faculty - is immediately transferable. Its a brilliant choice.

I don’t understand why folks worry about Kim’s experience (or lack there of) in running Dartmouth. Are you guys saying that running Dartmouth is harder than running a country? There is a certain person who has practically no executive/managerial experience before becoming President of the US, if I can recall :-)

Just last semester, he taught a large undergraduate class together with Arthur Kleinman (his Ph.d. dissertation advisor and an MD/Ph.D. who has worked extensively in China) and Paul Farmer, his co-founder of Partners in Health.

Time will tell, but easily the most impressive college president choice coming out of the box that I have seen in the 10 or 15 years I’ve been paying attention to such things.

Marite, perhaps he didn’t value that experience enough to list it on his CV?

Perhaps that cv preceded the course? The search began well before last semester.

By all accounts, it was a fabulous course.

I agree with Danas: it is an inspired choice. Jim Kim has proven fund-raising experience, proven administrative experience, has great connections here and abroad, is much admired by colleagues and students and is a great role model.

I agree with ohmadre’s earlier ~ post read “Mountains Beyond Mountains.” I think Dartmouth just hired a passionate, committed person who will bring lots of positive energy. Seems to be just the type of person needed to lead an outstanding institution…he is certainly no stranger to academics or fundraising…I highly recommend this book to get a feel for the man. Kudos to Dartmouth for an unusual and intriguing choice. Good luck to Dr. Kim.
