I just got an email from the Mech Engineering Department at Berkeley, inviting me to apply for the Drake Scholarship, which covers tuition and fees for four years. The email says that my high school record is great blahblahblah but i think its probably to almost, if not all, mech eng applicants.

Everything must be postmarked by 3/27, so I don't have a ton of time to write all the essay stuff and fill out the application, not to mention I have to get TWO recommendations, both from math or science teachers.

Can I use my admissions essay for the part that asks about my interest in engineering?

is this like an impossible thing? do you know anyone with this scholarship??

I know this is a rather specific question, but I'm not sure if I should try to pull this together or if my shot is like 1 in a million anyway. I'd hate to do all that, get it ready and then March 26 not even get into Berkeley...

I got this too, using search: its only given to 6 per year. And if it doesnt even mean that I’m in, that would a lot of work for NOTHING.

also curious for others input.

This is basically impossible to get. Really tough.

I figured. I just read the application, and its like"what are some engineering books you have read so far."

yeah.

So, just to dispel some rumors, this scholarship is not impossible to get. In fact, the department only usually gets 50-100 applications a year and how many we award depends a great deal on the applicant pool. So, if you’re admitted, the only way you can guarantee you’re not going to get it is to not apply. I agree it’s a lot of work, but it it’s a 4 year scholarship. In this day and age, I’d say it was completely worth it to try. -Shareena (Mech Eng Ugrad Adviser, UCB)

What are the stats of your applicant pool? What are the Drake scholars average ACT/SAT scores, GPA and ranking?
