Hi, I need help on choosing what school to go for Pharmacy. Can I get placement rates, etc? I am from Illinois so I will be getting out of state tuition. Thank you to anyone who can help!

Can anyone help me with this?

You can probably find these on the school website.

Also check out the forums on studentdoctor.net. Just by looking at the names U of I seems better just cuz it’s a state school and seems to have more rep than Drake.

If you scores are good Iowa will likely give you some merit money. When we visited their booth at the college fair they came up with 6 or 7K from various OOS guarantees.

I know that Drake used to have somewhat of an auto-advance policy for pharmacy, which is a tremendous advantage. And if that is still true you can make it through in 6 years. Ask Iowa how many students apply and how many are admitted. For most state schools it’s a pretty big number that apply for the slots available. Purdue for example has had between 800-1100 apply each year for 165 spots, and the average age for acceptance is 22. That means that a lot of them have gotten their bachelor’s degrees first and then another 4 years of pharmacy school. That’s a lot of schooling for a degree in a field that is becoming extremely saturated, and salaries are dropping.

University of Iowa. Unless there are good scholarships for Drake. I would go with U of I.

I do not know much about Iowa’s pharmacy school. I do know that Drake has a program where entering students know if they are accepted into the pharmacy program before starting their freshman year.

They also have a joint D.Pharm/MBA program that can be done in 6 years if coursework is planned out right. That would be a good program for a pharmacist wanting to own his/her own pharmacy.

In case size of school matters to you, U of I is a lot bigger school and Drake is a smaller school (though still D1). And, IMHO Des Moines is a lot easier to get around then Iowa City is, plus it is bigger so there are more things to do.

@illinoismom4 At Iowa, last year estimated who applied was 290 and accepted was 108, with OOS-35 students.

Those were the numbers that were offered interviews. I imagine the actual number of applicants was much higher. If you are offered a place at Drake, I would definitely consider it over taking a chance at Iowa. Also, have you had much pharmacy experience? Iowa will be looking to see if you have shown interest in the field.

@illinoismom4 no I haven’t because I’m a senior in high school going to be a college freshman. The only experience for me was a job shadow. (if that counts)
